Thomas McCune

Need Help! PLEASE
ALL that I have are the names of my great grandmother's parents:

Thomas and Mary McCune born in Ireland
This is what is listed on her death certificate:
Daughter Anna S McCune was born 23Nov1857 Philadelphia, PA.

Where do I start to find something for these gr gr grandparents?
I've looked at the census for PA with a couple possibilities, but no luck connecting to Thomas or Mary.
Appreciate whatever you can offer in advance.

Hello Nannette,

The McCune surname is listed in the extracts of Griffiths Valuations in only three counties ... Antrim, Armagh and Down.

There are two listings on the Spinning Wheel Census 1796 ...
David M'Cune, Loughgilly. Armagh
John M'Cune, Mullaghbrack. Armagh

McCune can be written a variety of ways which makes it harder to look up- McKeown, McKewn, McKeon, etc.

yes, in the beginning I was just trying to find it like it was spelled on the death cert then realized back in Ireland it could be spelled other ways.

Also check out the townlands near Lurgan. There was a family living there with a similar surname "Macoun". They lived in Lurgan Town and also the more rural townland of Moyraverty. I am going from memory but I think they were in the Linen industry. They were not listed as weavers as most were though so I presume they were more affluent (possibly the owners of a factory). I think there is a family burial plot within the old Shankill graveyard in Lurgan town.

Hello Nannette,

Before you start taking wild guesses as to how the name might have been spelt whilst the family lived in Ireland it would be worth while to slow down and consider what you know about the family that might help in finding some links to them in Ireland ... the family's denomination would be a good starting point. Have a look at the Christian names in the family ... do any of them look like surnames?

I realise that there are many different spelling variations but I'd be inclined to stick to researching McCune before you consider other variations.  Have a look at the Surname Search on the Irish Ancestors site.  www.ireland.com/ancestor/surname

I googled "McCune Quakers" and spotted an article headed "Vol. 8, pg 170, Ohio History" from "The Scholarly Journal of the Ohio Historical Society" which mentions a Colonel McCune whose ancestry could be traced back to Scotland. The spelling was originally McEuen. The Valuations show that there were several families named McEwen in Ireland.

I will HAVE to take it slow.........................I only have Anna's name, birth info, death info and her parents names to start with. I may have found some information in PA where Anna was born; I'm still working with that.
I don't have any inforamtion to help me with what their prefession might be or anything.
I will jsut have to stay with Anna's info before I try to trace her parents back to Ireland.
I did read that a lot of peoplethat were  from Ireland lived in Scotland and vice versa.
