Paisley trade directories list the following:

1838/39
Munn, Armstrong, manufacturer, 35 Storie Street
Munn, James, manufacturer, 6 Causeyside – house 13 George Street

1829/30
Munn, Armstrong, manufacturer, 45 Storie Street
Munn, James, manufacturer, 17 George Street

Can you tie this James into your family? I would assume that it is he who is buried in Abbey Close.

My ggggf was also a manufacturer in Causeyside at that time. Like him, these Munns (brothers??) were most likely shawl manufacturers, which meant that they placed orders with a various weavers, stored and sold the finished shawls.

The library in Paisley has directories from 1813. When I next go over, I take a look.

I have just looked at my tree.
James Munn married Janet Slater (Sclater) 2nd June 1787 Paisley Abbey.
Their children were....

Armstrong bpt 1789 Paisley Abbey
James bpt 1791 Paisley High
John bpt 1794 Paisley Middle
Janet Lockhart bpt 1797 d. inf Paisley Middle
Walter bpt 1799 d.inf Paisley Middle
Janet bpt 1801 Paisley Middle
William Lang bpt 1804 Paisley Middle (a weaver)
Walter bpt 1805 Paisley Middle (my 4x great grandfather) weaver, grocer, hairdresser
I also found Walter and William in the Poor Relief.

Walter had 12 children born in Renfrew and Dumbarton. (Wife Agnes Young)

To make it even more confusing his daughter Janet Munn married Daniel Munn from OK in 1847, she was his second wife, his first wife was Catherine Bryson, she died in 1846.
Daniel was a merchant general grocer spirit dealer.His parents were Walter Munn b.1763, a Farmer and Margaret Cowan b.1775.

hi pettsy do you know if william lang munn was married to a mary dykes and did they have a daughter named catherine. if so i've been looking for this thread for years catherine was my great grannie.

i have the MI books for Paisley. No Munns fraid but there is a John Slater - wife jean Barr and Heirs 1820 in the Abbey Churchyard

The info came from renfrewshire MIs pre 1855 Vol2 by JF & S Mitchell/

All it says is No 236 John Slater, w Jean Barr & Heirs 1820

They abbey cemetery these days is no more and most of the stones have been placed flat in ground in grassy area outside the abbey itself tho in 1820 it would have looked very different.

Once they opened Woodside and Hawkhead - in west and east of town respectively burials stopped in Abbey.

Your ancestors like mine (I am a Paisley buddie!) would have been handloom weavers til the mills were built in mid 19th century. The handloom would have been in the cottage/house where they lived for the most part.

I think it unlikely unless they were reasonably wealthy they would have had headstones. Their death records if they still exist will be held by National Archives Scotland who have the mortcloth rental records - the only source pre 1855 of death records since death certs weren't required pre 1855. The mortcloth was black cloth they hired from church to place over coffin or body (cos some didn;t have coffin) for burial service.

Thank you for the info, yes my Munn's were Weaver's.
All I know about the Slater's were James Munn was a Publican.
Where I don't know 

I have never heard of a Mortcloth before, how interesting.
I wish I had known about it as I was in Edinburgh in July (and Glasgow).
