Are these towns/places in Armagh?Complete
« on: Sunday 15 July 07 10:54 BST (UK) »
I have traced some relatives back to Armagh, Ireland but I can't find the "towns" that are stated.  I am wondering if they would be property names instead of towns (this is common in Australia).   If you know of these places would you also be able to tell me which parish they are in.  I have included the family name in case it is a property.

The first is Drumbanagher  (family name is John Boyd)
The second is Poyntzpass (family name is James Little)

I would dearly appreciate any information.  The information is from 1841 (travel documents to Australia), I know that borders change so hopefully this might be of some use.

Regards

Kate

Poyntz Pass is just north of Newry, between Newry and Lurgan.
Drumbanagher is a townland (not town) in Killevy Parish, Co. Armagh.

See PRONI website for geographical index:

Thank you so much for this information as now I can find the appropriate church records.  You have enabled me to move forward after sitting idle at this deadend for some time and I am greatly appreciative.

Hi Kate,

aghadowey has answered your query but I thought you might be interested in the following.

It's often a good idea to try a search engine like Google when looking for places.
A Google for Poyntz Pass gets quite a few hits including the following Wikipedia entry:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poyntzpass
And the Poyntzpass & District Local History Society:
http://www.poyntzpass.co.uk/index.htm
A Google for Drumbanagher also gets a few hits.

A good site for searching for townlands, parishes etc is the seanruad site (The IreAtlas Townland Data Base) which has a very flexible search facility.  It is at:
http://www.thecore.com/seanruad/

Regards,

JAP

Dear Kate,
I was just directed to your exchange on RootsChat.  Are you living in Australia?  I have some information on the Boyds of Drumbanagher and the Little family too.  Do you know the Book "A Lot About a Little?"

My Boyds settled in Ontario, Canada around 1825.  I combed the area around Poyntzpass, NI and found that a very large number of Boyd families once lived there (late 1700's to early 1800's) and virtually all of them disappeared thereafter.  So far, I have not been able to link them to my Boyds, but the possibility remains.  I tried to find a living male Boyd from those lines to encourage him to do a Y-DNA test - without success - even though I have a very good professional genealogist who lives in Poyntzpass.  Are you related to a Boyd from that area? And might he be willing to do at least a 12 marker test?  It is quite inexpensive now and easy to do.

I have quite a lot of stuff that might be of interest to you if you would like.  Actually, I know of some Boyds who live in Pennsylvania who are descendants of one of the lines of Boyds from that area.  Unfortunately, one of them did the test and he and I are not directly related.

Hopefully, this will make a contact with you and we can go from there.
Larry
