the oakes family from cheshire-any ROSE or PARROT in your tree?
« on: Saturday 14 July 07 21:06 BST (UK) »
hi..my oakes family i have traced back to ralph oakes b 1754 .he and his wife lived in backford, cheshire.they had 3 children, all babtised in st oswalds church,backford,cheshire....and from these ancestors i have my tree up to my latest grandaughter born in 2005.
i have had my DNA done for family tree dna (www.familytreedna.com)
i am a little dissappointed that my results show 423 people on ftdna with a 12/12 match to myself...i took a 67 match dna, so i`m obviously hoping to find a 66 or 67/67 match..this will give me someone from an exact  ancestor line as mine....2 of the 12/12 matches for me were mentioned about 7 times....ie   there were 7 matches named ROSE ...and 7 matches named PARROT.
has anyone with these surnames got any oakes members in their family?.....thankyou...allan

Allen,

It isn't clear from your post whether your surname is Oakes but I thought I'd get in touch with you anyway.

Several of us who have tested with FTDNA and found near-identical Oakes dna in our paternal line, motivating us to get active in the Oakes surname project at FTDNA.   That project has more than one haplotype represented, suggesting more than one family line but those of us who are most closely matched are trying to trace back to a common ancestor.  We'd be very interested in learning more of your family line and anything you'd like to offer us in the way of your DNA information.  Maybe we can help you research also!

By the way, a 12-marker match is essentially worthless -- going to 67 markers is definitely a good decision if you want to pursue this stuff further.   The 12 markers should have provided a haplotype prediction though -- what is yours?

I have extensively looked at the tree commencing with Ralph Oakes/ Mary Holland and how it has branched out and migrated throughout the UK but there is no evidence of the involvement of people with names Parrot or Rose.

I note that Wally says a 12 marker match is worthless, and my endeavours are not inconsistent with what Wally says; however, I cannot comment on the rigour of DNA analyses.

Hiya JO ....thanks for the input .....do you think it is possible to find Ralph Oakes and Mary Hollands parents ??
I have a possible father for Ralph - but no-one for Mary Holland
if someone was to come up with the same name for Ralphs father as I have it would give me a boost .
the man I have as a good possible is b 1675 and died 1722 ..

No, Ralph's father was born in 1658, his father in 1620 and his father around 1600.

Ralph and Mary Trelfa moved to Backford around 1770  with all of their children, except Thomas.
And some of their descendants returned to Middlewich where most children were baptised, others then moved to Liverpool City centre.

I understand from a co- worker, that Mary Holland's parents were Daniel (1678) and Elizabeth Downes and his parents, Johann and Sara Cooke, though I have not seen documented evidence.

Can you say more about the DNA testing, it is potentially ground breaking in the hands of top class researchers.

OK thanks....so now I am in limbo - do you have the father /grandfather and g grandfather of Ralph Oakes
b 1658
b 1620
b around 1600...............

Garston is in South Liverpool  .hence my username Garstonite...my Daniel Oakes came here to Liverpool from Neston and his ancestors went from Backford to Neston around 1800.
as for my DNA 67 marker - I have never had a match in 7 years - the nearest I have had is 67 - 3 ...in other words a match 3 generations away from that man .....
