Kath,
With Robert Pigdon not surviving long enough after his marriage to Martha Matthews to get onto a census ( thus no record of birthplace, age , occupation, etc.) it makes more difficult to identify the "right" Robert, from the candidates available.
Certificate of the Robert/Martha marriage will reveal Robert's occupation and his father's name and occupation, his address/residence in early 1855, and maybe his age.
Birth cert of Mary Ann and Edward Pigdon will also reveal Robert's occupation.
Over the River Tyne, on censuses 1841 ( 312/13-10-14) and 1851 (2403-132-62) in Swalwell, Co Durham, there is a Robert Pigdon, born 1829/30, son of couple John and Mary.
But this is only a possibility that needs corroboration.
