Killyleagh marriage 1840 .... please help !!
« on: Friday 13 July 07 11:33 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I am looking to trace / find out more about the following marriage and family .....

James Turnbull to Mary Greer / Neill / O'Neill on 10th march 1840 at Killyleagh.

They had two children in Ireland - Mary Jane b. 1841 and William b. 1844.

The next record I have for them is the 1851 Scottish census and the births of several more children.  Mary's maiden name appears as Neill, then Greer, then Greer, then O'Neill .... quite confusing.

The date for the marriage is on the birth certificate of their youngest child Anne born in 1861.

I'd love to find out more about where they came from and confirm Marys maiden name but I haven't got a clue how to do any Irish research .... any help or advice would be gratefully received as I am hoping to visit the area when I come over to Belfast later in the year.

They were my ggg grandparents.

Jan

Update ..... I have found another child for this couple which lists their marriage as 31st December 1840 at Cullintrough.

I have also found Marys death certificate which lists her parents as John Neil a farm servant and Jane Kerr.

There is a Turnbull family history tree in volume 8p185 in in Blackwood Family history manuscript trees in LinenHall library, Belfast.  I suggest you ask them for photocopying estimates if they think your knowledge relevant and be prepared to pay the extra for post and packing. However if the material is really relevant when you get it, I suggest a further donation to this unique library that is always needing extra funds. Linen Hall Library,17 Donegall Square North, Belfast BT15GB, Northern Ireland, Telephone: +44 (0)28 9032 1707,  Fax: +44 (0)28 9043 8586, Email:info[at]linenhall.com.
Next I would be looking up Ros Davies Co Down website use google to find.
Keep going, more sources will be offered , Jim

I peeped at freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rosdavies/, her Turnbull entries show a concentration in Dromore from earlier times.  Useing her Churches section for the civil parish of Killyleagh , you should be able to locate the existing records for each denomination, that may be very important for you, as they may become one of the few records for your period 1840.

Thanks again.
