Don't know about that. You did well to find him in the 1871 census Emma. I was having no luck at all with him. I have been trying for hours.   Presume they must have been in France or India a lot of the time, particularly with your find listing his birth there.

According to the Rootsweb Robert Bain Family Tree :

His father, Archibald Hugh Hope, Maj. Gen. was born Jan 17, 1820, died Mar 8, 1890, son of Hugh Hope b. Inveresk With Musselburgh, Midlothian, Scotland and Isabella Gray Mackay b. Abt. 1801 in Scotstoun, Peebles, Scotlland.

There is no further information about his mother.

Lewis A. Hope died May 2, 1929
Mrs. Lewis A. Hope died July 21, 1952

(I often use the Rootsweb site as a beginning, or guide then seek verification of that info.)
