2nd September 1898 was a Friday.

From 1885 British red uniforms were superseded by khaki.

I'm now at the stage of thinking OH ME DEAR MAN why didn't you write more plainly so that now, more than a  hundred years later we can read it.   Excuse atrocious pun........

Do hope we can solve it

Is it possible that the name is        ........  A. Hope?

Not joking,  but then again some folks would look at the signature and think we didn't have a hope in **** of figuring it out.

When I sat farther back, squinted, with and without my eyeglasses, I could see the name "Hope".
