Hi J.J. and all

2nd September 1898 was a Friday.

From 1885 British red uniforms were superseded by khaki.

I'm now at the stage of thinking OH ME DEAR MAN why didn't you write more plainly so that now, more than a  hundred years later we can read it.   Excuse atrocious pun........

Do hope we can solve it  ::)

Not joking,  but then again some folks would look at the signature and think we didn't have a hope in **** of figuring it out.  ;D

I've been away from the PC since Friday.....had another look at the awful handwriting and still can't think of any more suggestions :'( :'( :'(

When I sat farther back, squinted, with and without my eyeglasses, I could see the name "Hope".

Have to agree with you Kathleen, I've been staring at it for ages and "Hope" keeps appearing for me too!!

I just asked my partner to look at it and he reckons it says Unis A Flipe?
