The chap in the photograph is M. G. J. ? and the addressee is the name you are trying to decipher - NOt his name, of which you only have the initials

that's exactly what I was trying to say in reply 23.(can't get quotes to work) about the different writing.

I think the bloke in the photo wrote the 'As I appeared............' bit, and then someone else  (the receiver possibly) put the name of the soldier on later, as you do on the back of snaps to help you remember who it was!!

Not sure about the 2/- heirogliphs bit . I still think it is a name

Here's what you said Helen (I must have missed reading that post!!!):

I thought this at first, but going back and looking at the whole thing, I think the name at the top was put on by the receiver or someone else as the writing and pen is slightly different, and the 'As I appeared........' bit was the only original writing, as the subject and the person it was sent to, knew who he was, so no name was needed.

Regardless, Annie said she knew what all the rest said and only needed the top line...and yes, although the script "A" is similar it does seem to be another hand...( look at all the lower case "a "...all different....   who knows?
