Annie do we know where in the world this man would have lived?
A quick look on ancestry threw up Chas Alpe, Christopher Ayliffe, Christopher Alff, and Alpe, and Philip C Albee. I have also  found an Asalpe. Phew this is a hard one!!

Actually Anni, it reminds me of my first "Autographs" I got as a young girl, when we visited Winnipeg for the Pan Am Games...water polo? I got all these scritchy scratchy names a team from I think Brazil...looked just like that...Hard to tell where one signatue ended and the other began...  Hugs, J.

Perhaps it would help you to see the handwriting a bit better if you were to invert the colours to black/white background??

Sometimes it helps to see clearly this way. I did this with some horrible handwritten census pages.

  Maybe that's even an "O" at the start  if the handwriting is  inconsistant or as it's been implied someone else's...Ovis...Onis...

The third letter from the right, Annie, reverts back at the base, which only an "s" should do, I would think... so this could also be an unusual foreign name as Helen implied...
