All I ever knew about Omdurman before this thread was that Winston Churchill fought there. Now I know so much more but still can't decipher  the writing.

Helen, sorry to have missed your original thought on writing difference. Not everyone agrees with you, Lloydy and me though.

J.J  P l e a s e tell what you have seen or I'll keep wondering about that too  ::) ::)

I've just re-read (for the 10th time) all about the Battle on Wikipedia ;D but I can't find anything remotely like the words!

Mr Lloydy has just been having a look aswell and he thinks the first word could be Lewis, and two possibilities for the second:

Either,  Gillipe (or something like that!), or something completely different, and not a name......As Life ??? ???

It was suggested earlier that the word 'on' ends the third line, when it's actually part of the name Omdurm an.
