Simon FINCH
« on: Wednesday 11 July 07 19:10 BST (UK) »
Please can anyone help me with my brickwall. I am trying to find where my ancestor Simon Finch was born, the first record I have is of 2 son baptisms in Kersey in 1717 so I assume Simon was born around 1690ish. The frustrating thing is on his burial record in 1728 it states Simon finch of Creighton. I have checked Creeting, Cretingham, Gorton and Kirton as there is no such place as Creighton in suffolk, in fact the only place by this name is near Uttoxeter and I have checked there. If anyone has any parish records for a place beginning with C or K can they check to see if there are any Finches. Family names are Simon Samuel Edward Joseph James John. I am not familiar with the Suffolk accent so if anyone has any suggestions as to the place they think the Vicar meant when he wrote Creighton I would be very pleased to hear them. The only thing I can think is that however the place Hadleigh was pronounced then (1728) then my place must sound something like the end ie the eigh part. thanks

Have you considered that Creighton might have been the name of a property in the village.

There was an Augustinian Priory (remains are at Priory Farm), many of the old buildings still in the village would have been there in your ancestors time.

If you try to find out more about the name Creighton it will take you back to the Scottish Crighton.

Do you have a scan of this entry that we could take a look at for you ?  ;)

Regards, SM ...
Every time I find an ancestor,
I have to find two more!

SUFFOLK - Pendle, Stygall, Pipe, Fruer, Bridges, Fisk, Bellamy, Sparham - all link to  Framlingham
DERBY - Bridges and Frost (originally Framlingham/Parham)
NOTTINGHAM - Lambert & Selby
BERKSHIRE/then Hammersmith LDN - Fulker
LDN/MDX - Murray, Clancy, Broker, Hoskins, Marsden, Wilson, Sale

GGfather Michael Wilson born Cork, lived Fulham London - moved to Boston USA 1889, what happened next?

If this is how its spelt, its possible it could refer to somewhere outside of Suffolk.

A possibility is just the place he was living when he died and not where he was originally from.

 :-\ :-\

With a Suffolk accent, Creeting would be prounounced "Creet'n"
Cretingham - "Cretinum"

Hi, I have just found your entry here, not noticed it since 2007!  Did you have any luck?  Did anyone reply to you?

I have the Finches in my direct line and I have the same problem with this record for Simon.  I cannot find this village anywhere....so I am trying to "Think outside the box" so to speak.  My records are very thin but I am in the direct line of Edward Finch 1721 Kersey.

Thanks

hi, no I couldnt find him anywhere, also the parish records were getting difficult to be confident that I had the correct direct line as all brothers/families all used the same few forenames. Where are you up to.... so we are distant relatives.

Hi Val

I am at the same point as you.  I was making use of the free Find My Past weekend and came across his record.  Having had a good look around, I do think that Creighton is a house name?.  The trouble is Finch is a common surname and there are lots of them, esp in Kersey but I did find a few in Middlesex.

No new information I'm afraid

My line is through Edward then John then Elizabeth.  Who are your line?

Regards Jenny

SIMON FINCH:
On his burial records the Vicar has written " Simon Finch of Creighton" the only place written like this is in
Staffordshire near Uttoxeter and I have checked the Parish records and there are no Finches mentioned. All
spelling was done phonetically then so it could be the spelling of another village in Suffolk eg Groton, Kirton,
Creeting, Cretingham,Sproughton, however I have searched all these Parishes and cannot find any mention of
a Finch. If the vicar was not from Suffolk the local accent may have confused him. The village next to Kersey
is Hadleigh so this could explain the spelling of Creighton.
On the Parish records for his burial it states "buried in Woollen" This refers to the Burial in Woollen Acts of
1667 & 1678. These Acts were attempts to protect the English Wool Trade and required that all bodies
should be buried in wool with the exception of those who died from the
Plague. A Five pound fine was imposed for burials which did not comply with
the Acts. By 1814 the Acts were repealed
I have a feeling that this Simon could be related to Finches in Poslingford and Fressingfield as all three Parish
records first record a Finch entry around 1715 after the eldest Finch had moved there after being married and
born somewhere else. The details are
