Donagh/Carndonagh Parish Records McElhinney
« on: Monday 09 July 07 17:00 BST (UK) »
I am looking for info on James McElhinney (the Meen - of Meenahoner, Carndonagh) who married Mary Dougherty.

I don't have dates but I know their son William was born on the farm at Meenahoner circa 1890 and left for NZ with his brother John in 1908. The family thinks John stopped in Oz but his line is "missing".

I would like a marriage record (they were Catholic), Griffiths Valuation info or anything anyone can find.
Any suggestions as to where I should be looking my research would be most most appreciated!

I know that James (Jimmy's) brothers were Dan (the Loch) and Gerry (the Bunnerer) and from speaking to the family it would appear that James and Dan were Gamekeepers - one on the land one by the loch. The land was given/purchased by the family at some point and they sold Turf from the land.
A second cousin (or futher away) still lives on the family farm but none of the rellys who still live there know anything about the family history so I'm starting with very little.
There are a number of McElhinney family's in the area who are not directly related (or the link has been forgotten).
Any help would be wonderful. Julia

Hi Julia

I thought I would add additional information on this thread as others reading may get confused over the two separate threads and you may miss out on a chanced to be helped.

To use family search enter your details in the search box on the home page. You may have to play around with places and dates. If you wish to search for children of James and Mary click the advance search below your original search box and enter the details in the parent boxes. When your search produces results scroll down to the British Isles, if your ancestors were born in Ireland that is where they should be. You could also check the pedigree and resource files listed in your results, aswell.

This site was provided by Pels for my search on Mc Elheney name variants and you might like to use it for your Doherty also.  http://namethesaurus.com/Thesaurus/Search.aspx.

Now I did have a look at http://archway.archives.govt.nz but absolutely no results for McElheney with the variants I used, you might like to try your own variations of the name and see how you get on.

Good luck hunting

I had a look on the NZ weblink you gave me, using the spelling I use for my name (McElhinney) and got 39 hits - at least some of them I know are rellys but I haven't investigated yet.
Thanks for that.
I am starting to get the impression that my Irish side is going to be difficult if not impossible to do much more with.
I would love to have a look on the 1901 and 1911 census but all the links I have found to the Donagh Parish/ Carndonagh are missing. I think the website might be being upgraded so it might just require some patience until it's back up again.

Hi Jules

I suggest you invest in some head gear, like the boxers wear, you're going to need it for banging your head against the wall for your Irish lot. Aye! it's a difficult one.

Another little trick I learned today on Ancestry. Even though one may not have subscription I found that if you enter in your search box who your looking for and find the year you can in a roundabout way find the parents. As you can't access the trees without subscription, purely by accident I found if I entered the year and country and if possible the county ( no names )and clicked on search
you'll come up with results for the Public, One World and Personal Family trees, according to the year entered.
As an example I was looking for Robert Mc Elheney and found a public tree that would only give me access to the date of birth. I decide to further search and enter country and county details with the year of birth and must have somehow deleted the names and entered the search and under the 75 search results that came up I found the same Robert Mc Elheney, same Birthdate and in the same family tree which provided his parents name that I couldn't access on the previous search. The same applied to the One World tree.

It may not be ingenuous or new but I managed to match a few relies up.

Enjoy your hunting and pleased to here you've found some results

Cheers

lil

Hello Fellow McElhinney (var) researchers..My GG Grandmother was Sarah McElhinney,
guesstimate birth c 1810-15, unknown townland, possibly Kilmacrenan Parish? Sarah
married James Boyle, by the time of the Griffiths they where living in Killhill,Townland
of Bellanascaddan, Nr Letterkenny,Kilmacrenan Parish.  I know that both James and
Sarah were deceased before 1887, and that their son Charles Boyle (b c 1842) took over the
running of the farm until his death  - between 1901 - 1905.  Charles Boyle m Cislia (aka Giley/Jiley
McFadden) 1873, Kilmacrenan RC, witness's at the marriage William McElhinney and Henry Boyle -
Henry was Charles Boyle's younger brother.
Other McILhenny's living in Bellanascaddan at the time of the GV Charles and John.

If anything looks familiar..please contact me. on e-mail address removed to prevent spamming & other abuse.

Many thanks

Hi Julie
This could be who you are looking for.

A James McElhiney married a Mary Doherty in Sacred Heart RC Church Carndonagh on 18/04/1875. Alas no townland is given so this is the best I can do.
There was also a Bernard McElhiney  of Ternaleagu married a Mary Doherty of Treanban in same church 05/04/1862
