EASTWICK, William, death cert 1863
« on: Sunday 08 July 07 21:06 BST (UK) »
I've got a death certificate for a William Eastwick who died May 1863 in Upper Clapton, Hackney.

He was 49 at the time of death, his occupation is shown as 'formerly a Carrier'.

I thought this was my 3xgreat grandfather, William Estwick, but I'm pretty sure that its a William Eastwick who is showing on the 1861 census as being born in Cheshunt, Herts, and whose occupation is Carrier.

If you think this certificate relates to your tree, pm me with your details and I will send on to you.

Hancock, Ferris, Estwick, Bentley, Phippen, Price, Jones, Corfield, Lambert, Bain, Rowell

I am looking for a William Eastwick who married in 1849 in Poplar. I have lots of information on the Eastwick family in north and east London. I think we should compare notes.
Please call me on 01942-608450.

Hi,

Not sure if we'll be talking about the same families.  Mine were definately called Estwick - I just took a punt at the William Eastwick death being mine.  But you never know, there could be a connection.  The Estwicks do seem quite elusive.

What I know about mine:

William Estwick, born in Hitchin 1813, son of Thomas Estwick & Keziah Bentley
Married Ann Salt in Stevenage, 1834 - son William Bentley Estwick born and died 1838
Had son with Louisa Hancock (my 3xgreat grandmother) - William Bentley Hancock in 1852
Ann Estwick died in 1855
Married Louisa Hancock in 1856
Louisa died in 1862
Married Eliza ?Joyner in 1862
Had son William Freeman Estwick in 1863
Died in 1866 in Edmonton (White Webbs Farm, Enfield)

William was a Tent / Waterproof manufacturer and have discovered that he was official supplier to HM War Department.

Most of this happens around Stepney/Shoreditch/Poplar.

If you think we might be talking about the same people, let me know!

Hello Jane,

I think you are probably right, I can find no connection between the two families, although my family did come from the Enfield, Edmonton & Poplar areas before moving to the Hackney/Plaistow area.

The only other possible connection is that, on the IGI, many different spellings were used within the same family's records, at least up until the late 18th century. I have also found this to be the case when researching parish records that have not been entered on the IGI.

It may be that way back in the dim and distant past there was only one spelling and that this became corrupted simply because of illiteracy.

Do let me know if you ever find a connection. (I will do the same for you).

Regards,

     Bob

Hello again Jane,

Any chance you could e-mail me a copy of William Eastwick's death certificate?

It's a bit of a long shot but we could be related.

Thanks,

     Bob

The Eastwick family that I am descended from were also in Enfield by the early years of the 19th century. I am interested in Hector Fleming Goff Eastwick (c 1802 - 1880) , a labourer, who married Jane Fairbrother (1799 - 1870) from Alnwick in Northumberland.  They had at least five children: William Hector, Anne, Jane Amelia, Thomas Everet, and George Thomas (who married Emma Bradford).

Anyone recognise this family?

Many thanks

Chris

This is definitely my family.

William Hector Goff (1822-1884) was married in 1849 (I have a copy of the marriage certificate). Unfortunately his father was named on the certificate also as William Hector Goff). I have spent several years trying to locate WHG senior with no success. It would appear from your information that the entry on the marriage certificate could have been flawed and WHG's father was, in fact, HFG.

Please get in touch, I have masses of information you may find useful.
