Thanks Almag,
I still haven't found the right Richard Woon in spite of extensive research in the area so will give Falmouth a try.  I now have to eliminate every Richard, one at a time, and see what I am left with.  He may have died in a mine accident and records are pretty scarce.  I am still not sure of his parents either.  Need to find another researcher for this branch of the Woon family.

Thanks,
Heather

Perhaps I can help: Jane Hambly (b. 1776) was my 4x gr grandfather Richard Hambly's younger sister. He moved from Truro to London, where she joined him, marrying their first cousin Robert Trestrail, also of Truro, at St. Martin in the Fields, Westminster in 1790. They had only one child, Mary Anne Trestrail (1792-1871), so it would appear that Richard Trestrail died shortly after. In any case Mary Anne returned to Truro, later marrying a John Knight and producing twelve children, the ninth of whom, Jane (b. 1829) bears the middle name Woon. It is plausible that she was named after her mother's stepfather.

My 3x gr. grandmother Mary Hambly's older sister Rebecca Hambly, (b. London 1792 - both daughters of Richard) married a John Pells of Middlesex in 1817.  They had two sons: Richard Hambly Pells (b.1825) and William Pells (b. 1830).

Oh wow, thank you so much for that information.  I have had so much trouble finding the correct Richard and Jane.  There is much confusion as I thought my Richard was the one with brothers William and Thomas but alas not, so I am still searching.  William Woon was a missionary in Tonga and New Zealand and his cousin Rebecca Hambley Pells was also in New Zealand.  I have lots of information on William and some on Rebecca.  I think my Richard is connected to him in some way but not his brother as family stories mention Hambley.

Do you have any further information on the Woon or Hambley families.  I will gladly share what I have but I fear it will not be much as I had trouble finding the correct Richard and Jane given the information I had.

I am away at a wedding and a bit of a holiday at the moment and will be back home in early April.  Thank you so much.

Interesting to learn of the NZ connection. I think there must be two Rebecca Hambly Pells, as the one I find in NZ who married a Matthew Marriner produced ten children starting in 1838 with John Woon Marriner up to Annie Aubrey Marriner in 1858. My 4x gr aunt Rebecca was born in 1792, which would make this impossible. It is likely therefore that she had a daughter Rebecca born around 1818.  You might find her mother Lydia's 1832 will interesting for the witness to it:
I Lydia Hambly of the parish of St Luke Chelsea, County of Middlesex, being of sound mind and memory do make this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following: first to my dear daughter Lydia Martin I bequeath my house No. 8 Peacock Street, Newington Butts, Surry. Also my household furniture and whatever property may be retained in my house No 40 Wellesley Street Chelsea; to my dear daughter Elizabeth Ann Mason I bequeath the sum of two hundred and fifty pounds principle money for her use independent of her husband, the said William Mason to have no control over the same; to my dear daughter Mary Cakebread fifty pounds; my wearing apparel to be divided between my four daughters and all my just debts and funeral expenses and proving this my will to be paid, the residue of stock in my name in the Bank of England to be equally divided between my five children Isaac, Lydia, Elizabeth Ann, Rebecca and Mary and I appoint my oldest daughter Lydia Martin whole and sole Executrix of this my last Will and Testament feeling assured she will most religiously and righteously fulfill the same.  As witness my hand this sixth day of October, eighteen hundred and thirty-two.
Lydia Hambly
Witness Thomas Symons, 3 Wellesley Street Chelsea
Richard Woon, 1 Gifford Street, Hoxton

Thanks for that.  This is where I get confused.  I thought this Richard, the witness, was my Richard but on further investigation he married someone else, an Elizabeth I think as I cant get into anything but my email from here and had several children born in London.

He died in 1838 around the right time for my Richard as Jane was alone with her children in the 1841 census although it doesnt state that she was a widow as it does in the 1851 census and I can find no other death that fits but  he was in London when my gr gr grandfather John was born in 1837 in Cornwall.  The witness Richard is the brother of William.  I think my Richard is related to this family in some way but cant figure out how.  My grandmothers family have quite a bit of info written down although not far enough back to prove which one is my Richard and my father always said the name Hambley was a family one and that there were Trestraills too.

Sorry I cant check my info until I go back home to Australia at the end of March but I know I have never been able to connect with the correct Richard and his family.

My Richard and Jane had 3 children, Mary born around 1835, John around 1837 and Nanny who some think was a twin of John but I think she was born around 1839 which would rule out the witness Richard.  I do not have any of these birth records.  Mary married Joseph Penrose and had lots of kids, John went to South Australia and married Mary Jane Magor also from Cornwall and had a large family and Nanny married John Sandow and had lots of kids.

The Rebecca Pells who went to NZ was a cousin of Richard the witness and his brothers William and Thomas.  There is a passage in William's diary which mentions "his cousin Rebecca Pells".

Wish I could connect the dots.
Thanks once again.

Hi Heather
Just joined and saw your old entry on the Woon Family.
I have a Nina Agnes Woon b. 1890 (m) Stephen Yerbury Towgood (pronounced as Toogood).
Nina is a descendant of Richard Woon & Janes Trestrail (Hambley).
Stephen is the son of Stephen Herbert Towgood my gg grandfather.
Would love to fill in a few Woon gaps on my tree.
If you reply I'll send my email address.
