Nehemiah Little
« on: Tuesday 03 July 07 10:01 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have a connection to Nehemiah Little, (an unusual name) who was a merchant in Fermanagh.  I don't think he was born there but he lived there and died there in the 1880's.  I cannot trace were he was born or anything about his family.  He was the father of Elizabeth Little (husbands gg grandmother)who married my husbands gg grandfather Joseph Mayers in the parish of Rossorry Fermanagh. (Townland Mullaghree).  I have found him in the Griffiths valuation and the Wills and Calenders but no more luck.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Ginny

Thank you Maryderry for this information.  I just wonder that if this is the same man, why would he go to Ireland, when so many Irish came to us.  I am baffled but it may the connection I am looking for.  Many thanks.

Nehemiah Little died 21 January 1884 aged 76 buried Rossorry along with Thomas Little, died 25 March 1866 aged 21 (his son). I know that another son died in USA and a daughter marrried William Reilly, bugler 68th regt. in 1869. Hope this helps - Seamas

No, I'm not related, but I'm a local historian in Fermanagh and have transcribed some of the gravestones at Rossorry Parish Church. I have also done a lot of work on the old local newspapers and have connected birth/marriage/death notices with gravestone inscriptions. Nehemiah is an unusual name and immediately jumped out at me when browsing the site last night - Seamas

Thank you Seamus, for sharing that information with me.

I have been trying to do research on Nehemiah, thinking it would be easy with a name like that, but came to a full stop.

With your experience, may I ask if there is anyway of confirming that Nehemiah, is in fact the father of Elizabeth Little, and where he was born.

Your advice would be very much appreciated.

Kind regards

Ginny

As Nehemiah was a businessman in Enniskillen it is likely that there will have been an obituary in the local papers which would be easy to search as we have a date for his death. This may well tell us which church he belonged to for although he is buried at the Church of Ireland he might have been a Methodist or Presbyterian - then the baptism registers for that church could be checked for Elizabeth. Incidentally the son James who died 10 July 1867 or 20th July according to local paper died of cholera at Cow Creek, Kansas. Mary Jane who married William Reilly is stated to have been the eldest daughter.
Also listed on this gravestone is Andrew Moreton, ex 6th Dragoons and Notts Yeomanry died 23 October 1905 aged 74 - I suspect he married another daughter of Nehemiah. He was a publican in Enniskillen.  -Seamas

Seamus

Wow.  Thank you for telling me this information.  So, I need to check the local papers for notification of  his death.   Would I be able to do this search on Ancestry?

Just goes to show that if you're patient, it is possible for information to get to you one day, considering my original post was back in 2007.

Many thanks once again.
