martha shepherd
« on: Monday 02 July 07 19:41 BST (UK) »
Hi all.
my 2x great grandmother Martha Shepherd is giving me a bad time. I have spend a long time with not a lot of joy and I am hoping someone may help.
Martha was baptised in Normanby le wold Lincolnshire in 1826. She married William Smith from Lincoln and their first child Charles was born about 1850. As of yet I have no document of the marriage.
on the 1841 census Martha was living and working as a farm servant in  Middle Rasen. I believe her parents were John Shepherd occupation a shepherd and his wife Anne. There are so many shepherds in that area about that time I am having great difficulty finding any more about the family.
can anyone help please regards Janet

I can't find a collective noun for shepherds...probably should be a "labour" because mine are usually out lambing at census time.

Anyway, my sympathies. There was a Shepherd marriage in Normanby le Wold in your timeframe:

John Shepherd - Mary Lidget 28/5/1827 (Westwold deanery marriages)

John
LINCOLNSHIRE: Sergeant, Dent, Watts, Fussey, Portas, Middleton, Bullivant, Howson, Lingard, Arliss, Laceby, Holtby, Lamb, Host, Stark, Hicks, Cuthbert, West. DEVON: Parkhouse, Brace, Mullins, Luxton,Cook ,Nicholls, Ley

Hi John.
It looks as if I must say thank you yet again.and I will try to remember that the shepherd is out looking after the sheep!!!!!!
I have fond so many bits and bots with this lot I am not sure what is what. Martha Shepherd daughter of John Shepherd and Anne baptised in December 1826
There is also a burial  John Shepherd in Claxby by Normanby June 1879 and. of Ann Shepherd in Tealby Dec 1883.
I have also found a marriage on the IGI of John and Anne Ash,  Feb 1818,however I cannot find any of the census apart from 1851 of John Shepherd and Ann with George Ash as nephew.
As Martha was working as a farm servant and on her own in 1841 and married to William in 1851 I cannot be sure I am on the right track. John and Ann seem to disapear after that. however after writing all this to you I just wonder if this is my family. regards Janet

Hello once again.
Now I am totally confused :'(
The good news is I am sure I have found Martha's marriage to William Smith although for a long time I had felt it was not quite right, however it is fitting more into place as it were.

Martha married William in Tealby 15th May 1849 and after finding William had got his age muddled in later census I am now certain I am on the right track, but it gives her father as Thomas and surname of Shepperd/Sheppard/ Shepherd. all on the same document.

There is a Thomas Shepperd in Tealby on 1841 and 1851 census and gives his birth in Market Rasen.

That still does not explain why Martha is on her own as a farm servant in Market Rasen aged 14 on 1841  or the fact I found a birth of Martha to John and Ann in Dec 1826.

Thomas also married an Ann in Tealby in 1825. The 1841 census gives a number of other children but it would make my Martha the eldest which may explain why she was working.

I am not sure just what I am asking you to do, just listen I suppose regards Janet

Hi Janet,

I'm doing Shepherds in Claxby by Normanby near Market Rasen, starting with William Shepherd (about 1776 at Claxby) and his wife Frances Shaw (about 1781 - Tealby) - married 1799. There is a daughter of that marriage, Martha,  christened in 1805 at Claxby.
Your dates do not seem to coincide, so may be related, but not direct lines.
