Peterbrough records in Northants RO.
« on: Monday 02 July 07 15:37 BST (UK) »
Hello.

I hope to visit the Northants. Record Office later this month during my holidays in England. I am particularly interested in records for the city of Peterborough from c. 1700-1815.

Does anyone who uses the office know of any good resources that are available for Peterborough, in addition to wills and parish registers?  I have just been looking on the A2A site for Northants. Record Office and have found several potentially interesting records but would be very pleased to know of others.

Thanks for any advice.

Best wishes,
Mark

Hi Mark

If you visit the Record Office link then you can get some idea of what's available.

http://www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/Community/record/Records.htm

The web site is very informative to planing your day(s) by reading Visiting Us.

Be aware though they use the CARN Record Ticket so you will need identification
which is noted under signing in.

They are closed on MONDAYS.

If it doesn't answer your questions let us know.

Hi Sandy,

Thanks for replying. I have actually already looked at the Northants. R.O. webpage. I live in Barcelona but will be visiting my parents in Lincoln for a week or so and am planning on driving down to Northampton for a day to consult records.

My question was basically to ask anyone who knows the office well if there are any resources I could use which I might not find easily as I have never been before. I have, for example, seen transcriptions of the St. John the Baptist Parish registers at Peterborough Library.

Thanks once again,
Mark

Hi again Mark

Well there is a whole load of transcriptions on the shelves but no index.

As you say maybe someone who goes often could help better than me.

I only transcribe records I obtain from the Record Office more than know what
is where even though I have visited for years.

Surely one way would be to e-mail the office saying could they advise you on the
collections they hold for the area you are wanting to view as you only have a
limited  time span therefore you do not want to waste it on the day in consulting
the resources on arrival if you have an idea of availability before hand your time
can be spent more efficiently.

Also some documents have to be ordered in advance on Thursdays.

Records are also produced every half an hour with a longer break at dinner times
and you may view 4 items at once.

Best of luck.
