Hay and Paul families, Rhynd
« on: Sunday 01 July 07 21:17 BST (UK) »
Is anyone researching these families? I'm looking especially for info on David Hay and Elizabeth Paul, who married in Rhynd in 1768. As far as I know, they had children Margaret (1780), Alexander (1784) and Thomas (1786). They also had a son Robert, born c 1773/4, but I haven't as yet located his birth record (info on parents is from his death record).

I'd like to know more on David and Elizabeth, trying to find out who their parents and siblings were. David was a tailor; I wonder if any sons would have followed in his footsteps?

There seem to have been a number of Hay families in Rynd, and I don't want to get them confused, any help appreciated, thanks.

Not sure if you are still looking, I have just started on this side of my family. David Hay is my 5th Great Grandfather on my fathers side. I am connected through his son Thomas. He married Margaret Moncrieff also of Rhynd however he didn't follow in his fathers footstep as he was a Weaver. Thomas's Son Peter was a Ships Carpenter, as was his son William Ogilvie Hay, William's son James was a Glass tube maker and this brings us to Harriet Mclauchlan Hay who married my grandfather Douglas McCorrmack Mackenzie who was a panel beater.

Please let me know if this is useful and if you need any more info (*), likewise any info you have would be gratefully received.

Bruce

Thanks Bruce;

I haven't found out much more on David and Elizabeth. There was a David Hay christened in Rhynd on 28 May 1738, (IGI batch no. C113912), father Robert Hay; possibly our David, since I believe my Robert to be his eldest son, and that would follow the naming pattern of giving the eldest son the grandfather's name.

Also an Elizabeth Paul chr 25 Oct 1741 in Rhynd, father John Paul (IGI batch C113912), and a David Paul chr 13 May 1739 father John Paul (C113912).

David and Elizabeth's marriage record reads: "December 3d 1768 David Hay in Balhepburn and Elizabeth Paul in the Parish of Aberneathy after having been regularly proclaimed here by us were married the twentythird of said month" (GROS 391/0020 0035).

I hope this is of interest,
Janet

Janet,

On the first reply is an attached GED file, showing David Hay (b 1738) married to Jane Carmichael (Gros 391/ 0030 0157) and their descendants.

Additionally father to David is Robert (as you stated) who had two other sons Thomas (B. 18 Jan 1741 Gros 391/ 0020 0006) and Alexander (b 24 Jul 1743).
The OPR for these births show for the 3 sons only a listing of the fathers name (not uncommon), however there are also three daughters listed to a Robert & Elizabeth Clark of Rhynd, Anna, Hellen and Margaret (B. 01/03/1730, 03/03/1734 & 16/05/1736 resp.) Whether this is the same Robert, I don't think so, but the dates do run consecutively, Elizabeth is Spelt  Clerk under OPR marriages she married a Robert Hay in Rhynd 18 Aug 1727 (gros 391/ 0030 0010).
But there is also listed with OPR a Robert Hay being married to Isabel Scot in Rhynd 19 Dec 1734 (gros 391/ 0030 0057), this marriage seems to me to be the preferred one to connect to the three brothers, and I was unable to find any births allocated to this pairing for that time period.

I will also try and attached the Death entry for Thomas Hay.

Thanks for this, Bruce. I was a bit confused as the gedcom file had David Hay born in 1758, I guess it should be 1738.
The marriage of David Hay and Elizabeth Paul was in Rhynd, Dec 23rd 1768 (GRO 391/0020 0035).

Unfortunately I've never been able to find the exact birth record of my Robert Hay b.c. 1773/1774, but his death record gives David Hay and Elizabeth Paul as his parents. I'll have a good read through the gedcom and sort out who's who,

regards,
Janet
