Hi Laura

There is a street called South Front in Southampton, but I'm not aware of a church located there.

There is an Evangelical Church in Portswood Road, Southampton which is probably about a mile away.

Yes. I notice the south front street. On that road theres a housing charity which incorporates the word 'church' into it. i looked on the map and for the life of me i cant recognize any of the roads or the area. For some reason though 1 of 2 places is sticking in my head 1. the (being restored ex homeless shelter nr ocean village) and 2. an actual church near the docks and just before you go on/ off the motorway towards lyndhurst. though i think that cud be because i keep having those two places cropping up in my search!

I seem to remember that the Church was on the corner of South Fronr and St Mary Street, opposite the Kingsland Market that was then there.  It had a stair way from the road going DOWN into the basement/cellar.

Hello

South Front Evangelical Church was indeed in the Kingsland (part of St Mary's) area of Southampton - on the road named South Front.  The area was involved with slum clearance in the 1930s and heavily bombed, but the church lasted until it was demolished in 1960.  You can find a picture of the church here:

http://www.plimsoll.org/resources/SCCArchivesServices/1576.asp

This site is excellent for finding all kinds of Southampton pictures of areas that have since been demolished etc.

I grew up on the Kingsland estate having moved from Northam to North Front in 1965 when I was 5 year's old and have very happy memories of Kingsland Baptist Church which was situated in South Front facing Hogland's park with Kingsland market across the duel carriage way on the left.I attended Sunday school and then the youth club which was held a couple of evening's a week in the huge basement which contained a snooker table for the boy's,a kitchen and most importantly to 11-13 year old girls in the early seventies there was not only a record player for us to blare out our 1970's pop but joy of joy's there was a small stage where we could dance to our heart's content. What bliss! What happy day's.
