Cathcart Old Parish Churchyard
« on: Friday 29 June 07 02:41 BST (UK) »
I'm going to have a look around this over the weekend.
I live a 10 minute walk from it (have done for 37 years) and only recently heard that one of my ancestors is buried there.

Anyway, the point.....

Does anyone have any names they want me to look for?

I know the graveyard is very run down and a lot of stones have been vandalised so I'm not sure what results I can get.

I'm happy to have a look though and take photos for anyone interested.

Dave

Thanks Dave. They seemed to move around alot.

Michael died 1924 aged 73 at St. James Street,  Glasgow in District of Pollockshields. Elizabeth Jane (Eliza Jane) his wife died 1929 same place aged 78. Two children of Michael & Eliza Jane that I know, Agnes & Sarah were born in Cathcart late 1880s.

My direct Dorman was born in Crossmyloof (registration district Cathcart, Glasgow today) with earlier residences for this family in West Kilbride. A Great Aunt is buried as a babe in West Kilbride in 1905. Earlier residences for my Dorman's include Cathcart, Hutchesontown, Campsie, Leswalt and Stranraer.

Early days so far but I'm surprised no more requests.
Did the same thing for Lauder 2 weeks ago and only got 1 request (that time from Oz).

Sorry to be pedantic but the area in Glasgow is Pollokshields (no c).  It might make a difference if you're searching for something.  There are also two areas in Glasgow called Pollok and Pollokshaws - don't get confused - different places altogether.

Co-incidentally, I've got ancestors in Hutchesontown, Glasgow and in Campsie - were your family millers / millwrights?

Crossmyloof brings back memories.  Only a mile away from where I live now.  Used to be an indoor ice skating rink there which i went to in the 70's.  Great fun.  Demolished now and there is a supermarket there now.  Shame.

Anyway, I'll see what I can find in the churchyard but as I said earlier, I know a lot of the stones have been vandalised - graffiti / knocked over.

Hi Dave

Got my fingers crossed. Checked my PAF and did a typo. Good to know about others. Michael Dorman was a gardener and earlier Dormans were farm servants. I've not come across a miller yet other than the surname and those were weavers.

Cheers,
Linda

Nothing yet.
Walked past it today as i do most weekends but tried to get in today for the first time.  All 3 gates securely padlocked.  I assume to prevent vandalism.
There is one bit of the wall which I will be able to get over quite easily but it was a very wet day here.
I'll return during the week in older clothes (dark coloured and a black ski-mask) and climb in.
A lot of the stones are in poor condition but I could see at least a few which are still in good condition, hopefully the ones which will be of interest to us.
I'll get back to you but probably not until next week now.

I am behind you all the way (at least in spirit :-) ) and so glad you are going to this trouble.  Seems it is a way with some of the small older cemeteries in the cities.
