Hello everyone on this chat - I have been given the job of family tree maker and come across these posts.  Ancient tho they are, they have given me loads of info so thank you all.  Martha Moxham nee Osmond is my husbands 3rd Gt Grandma through hers and Nathaniels son Frank, and grand-daughter Mercy Amelia. She Married a Skeats, who is my husbands great grandad.  It's really fascinating connecting all the bits together.

Does anyone know anything about Mercy Amelia? and the fact that she has a daughter called Ivy Handley Moxham before she married Charles Skeats?

Regards Suzan

Hi Suzan & welcome to RootsChat

We've met before on another site   :)

What do you want to know about Mercy Amelia (apart from the fact that she hated the name Mercy?)  She was my grandmother.

Hi Linda - yes Ancestry
I'm after 2 things -
Ivy Handley Moxham... any clues to a father and I think I have a husband 'Dear' but not sure.  Also, now I'm after Frank's sister Ellen.  I have her at 22 living with Frank and Elizabeth (1881) but then lose her.  There's a Marriage (1882) of an Ellen Moxham to James Henry Knight in Guildford (where frank was at the time) but also, in 1891 an Ellen Moxham is in Tisbury in a workhouse...  Have you ever looked?

Also, since we last made contact I have followed Skeats's back from Charles and found the 'rich uncle'  ;D from Pitters back to Pither and eventually Sirs Uvedales's

Ivy Handley Moxham

Father unknown, although she gives Charles Handley Moxham (deceased) Chef on her marriage certificate - probably ficticious!  You were right about her marrying Charles Dear.  I've updated the tree on Ancestry

Ivy was brought up by her grandparents Frank & Elizabeth Moxham and not as part of the Skeats family.  She knew she was illegitimate and was very bitter about it, but I don't know when she was told.

Mercy Amelia was 'in service' when she got pregnant and the family story was that the butler did it, but there's no evidence.

I have pictures of Ivy & Charlie.  If you would like copies send me your email address in a Private Message (don't post it here, against RC rules!)  To send PM, just click on the green scrolly thing under my avatar at the left of this message   :)

I've only tracked Ellen Moxham to 1881 and you're way ahead of me with the Skeats family.  I'll have a look on Ancestry and see what else you have posted   :) :)

Hi Everyone,

It's taken me a while but I've finally made a visit to the Wiltshire Record Office (highly recommended if you ever get the chance with friendly helpful staff and very good facilities) in search of the Osmonds of Tisbury.

I have been through the parish records and am now more puzzled than ever.

The "Osmond" children of James and Mary Osmond listed in the census appear to have been bapised under the surname of Davi(e)s. This includes all from Sarah Ann baptised July 4th 1824 to Betsey July 3rd 1836. Names and dates tie in exactly with Osmond family in 1835 Tisbury census and 1841 and 1851 national census. In the parish records the parents are listed as James and Mary Davi(e)s.

It's possible that James Davis died and his widow married James Osmond but the family is in the 1835 census as Osmond before Betsey was baptised in 1836 as a Davis.

I haven't found a death for James Davis in Tisbury.

I have found a marriage for James Davis and Mary Furnell both of this parish on 13 December 1823. Witnesses were William Osmond and James Mould. The entry is annotated with the words "Felices ter, et amplius" it seems to be good wishes though I haven't got exact translation yet.

I haven't found a marriage yet for James Osmond.

I do have James Osmond's death certificate now. He died on 4th February 1864 in East Tisbury of Tuberculosis of the brain. Mary Osmond registered on 6th February and was present at the death. James is said to be 71 and an agricultural labourer.

So more questions than answers. just to remind you my link to this family is via William Osmond (Davis) born in 1831 who was my 2x great grandfather.

Any thoughts on what to look at next?
