I have a problem... My gg grandad James Howard born abt 1795 in Enfield Middlesex. Married a Mary Ann Hayden in 1813 and died in bethnal green in 1836. Can anyone help me find out who his parents were as my 82yr old dad is driving me insane. oh his occupation by the way was an Ostler if that helps.

Hello, Georgina.

The only James Howard b circa 1795 Enfield shown in the IGI is one bapt 1810 so probably too late for you. His parents were a John & Ann & there were 8 siblings.  I can send you details if you would like to have them.

With regard researching for baptisms in the Enfield area I can only tell you of my own experience of doing the same thing.  I knew that my 3 X grgrandparents were married  at the large Enfield church of St Andrew, in 1818, I had a copy of the PR entry.   After marriage they moved into London & were at the same address for 5 census years, the place of birth given for 3X grgrandfather was varied, ranged from Tottenham, Southgate, Edmonton & Enfield.  However much I searched I could find no bapt for him.  I must admit  this was at the early days of my research many years ago, so was really feeling my way around the PRs available. The penny dropped one day when I realised that I had a clue from my own birth cert.   Altho' I was born in Tottenham the registration district was Edmonton, just goes to show it does help to read all the info on a cert. !!!  I then realised just how huge this district was, covering the sub-districts being Cheshunt, Enfield, Hornsey, Tottenham, & Waltham Abbey, which covered most of the places of birth for ggggrpa,  I then found that there was one large church in that area that had not been fully transcibed for the IGI.  All Saints, Edmonton, altho. technically in Edmonton it is only a short distance from St Andrews, Enfield. The PS for All Saints on the IGI start at 1831 & is associated with Southgate which start at 1805. It is also associated with Weld Chapel, Southgate.

The PRs for All Saints are at the London Metropolitan Archives so that meant a visit for me.  Within 20 minutes of looking at the film for PRs prior to 1800 I had found the bapts, marriages & burials of most of my 3 X grgrandparents families.

I hope you have found this a help in your search for the bapt of James Howard, altho'it might mean a personal visit to the LMA.

All Saints in Lower Edmonton, a few minutes walk from that station is a darn sight closer to Edmonton than Enfield.

yes, All Saints Edmonton is in Church St., a short step from Lower Edmonton Station to the east in one direction, but it you turn to the opposite direction the west, Church St runs across the old Cambridge Rd ( now A10) furher into Enfield.
