Hi Boris,
Although I'm not researching the Atterbys myself I do know that Atterby can often be mistranscribed as Atterly. (Witness Thomas Atterly on the GRO Index in Sep Q 1851. If you don't have the details, I can tell you place and date of the marriage.)
I've also seen double 't' transcribed as double 'l', so is it perhaps worth looking for Benjamin Allerby/Allerly?
Other possiblities:
Alterby, Alterly, Allarby, Attenby, even Allenby.
And in sheer and utter desperation (though highly unlikely I would have thought with a Lincolnshire accent!)any of those with an 'H' in the front.  :)

The "hilliterate haitch" appears in many forms ... I've certainly seen ALLUM as HALLAM, Ancaster as Hancaster, ANGEL to HAINGER etc.

Reject the ingenuity of the Lincs AgLab at your peril! ;)
Don't cry because its over. Smile because it happened.

Hi Geoff,
That is what I meant to say.   Well, something along the lines of 'highly unlikely, but knowing 'ow Lincs people put 'H's where there aren't any, and drop 'em where there are, 'ighly probable'.
(Blame lack of brain power on the BBC not showing Bon  Jovi   :-* till about 3a.m.   :)  )

Hi,
Thanks for the input Pam, and yes i have already been down that avenue when searching for Benjamins brother Richard Atterby he was found in 1901 at Mansfield transcribed as Allerby and so many other variants have also turned up that i keep a list of poss variations handy for when searching!
 But thanks again!
 Boris.
