Avon Street, Walcot, Bath
« on: Sunday 14 March 04 12:57 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know if 38 Avon Street, Walcot, Bath, Somerset still exists or any of its tenants around 1900s?  My late father Sidney Young was born there on 29/07/1909, one of twins to Charles and Emily Young(Emily formerly Wheeler).  We are trying to establish where both Charles and Emily were, both before and after this date, but not having much luck.  This address is the only definite info we have regarding my paternal grandparents.  There are so many Charles Youngs and Emily Wheelers it's like looking for a needle in a haystack, but perhaps someone local in this area could do a lookup, if they would be so kind.  I have had some feedback on my queries, but nothing so far has turned up anything positive(many thanks to those who have taken the time and trouble to reply to me)  I do know my grandfather came north with my father to either Manchester or Salford when my father was a lad, bringing my aunts Joanna and Ellen(poss Helen) too, but there were 8 or 9 children in all.  I would love to know what happened to the ones he didn't bring with him.  I know my late mother met Charles Young before she married my dad, but she didn't tell us anything about him apart from that he was a Slater Journeyman by trade and walked very upright and straight.  He was deceased according to my parents' marriage certificate(they married Sep 11, 1939), but I don't know when he died.  My father never spoke of his parents or siblings, so we have no info at all to go on apart from the Avon Street address.  Help!  Anyone.

Kind regards

Hi Ros. Thanks so much for the reply. That is a bit confusing as the Avon Street, Walcot address is the one on my late father's birth certificate.  I did check the address on the 1901 census and it was definitely there, but it was different people at the address then.  I don't even know if Charles and Emily lived there together or if it was just that my father was born there.  Perhaps it was the home of a relative of Emily's or something, but it was definitely Walcot, Bath, Somerset on my father's birth certificate.  This gets more confusing by the minute.  Ha Ha!  Thanks again for getting back to me.  It's really good of you.  God bless you.  Good luck in your own searching.

Kind regards

I am not sure if 38 Avon Street is still there, but most of it has gone. My mothers family were from there, a lot of the people were move to the suburbs before ww2.
I believe this was part of social engineering known as slum clearance. Most of the poeple that lived in the lower end of Avon Street work as street traders and hawkers from the early 1900 onwards. My grandfather had a business in the next street Milk Street in the 50 and 60's. hope this helps some.

Hi Mike.  Thanks a million for the information you sent.  When you say people were moved to the suburbs in the 1900s, where exactly would that be?  I hope you don't mind me asking, but I live in Swinton in Manchester so I'm not familiar with any of the areas of Bath.  All I know is that my father was born at 38 Avon Street in 1909 on 29 July, but not where Emily and Charles went after that or even how long they lived there after my father's birth or how many children lived with them.  I only know that Charles Young(my paternal grandfather came north when my father was a boy, but don't know exactly when.  Do you have an idea of any of the areas we could be looking at that they might have moved to?  If you have that would be great.  The information you sent is wonderful as I was told Avon Street didn't exist.  Thanks again for your time and trouble in replying to me.  God bless you.

Kind regards

Hi Paul.  Thanks so much for taking the time and trouble to reply and for your kind offer to try to trace my paternal grandparents.  Sorry, but we don't have the info on their marriage.  The only info we have is that my late father, Sidney Young was born at 38 Avon Street, Walcot, Bath on 29/07/1909.  We have had lists of possibles in various censuses, but the only definite link we do have is that Charles Young and Emily Young formerly Wheeler are named as my father's parents on his birth certificate.  I'm pretty sure that Charles was still alive in the 1930s as I remember my late mother telling me that he walked very upright, and that he was a slater by trade, but not much else about him.  She didn't mention Emily at all, so I don't actually know where Emily was in the 1930s.  My parents married on 11 September 1939 and Charles was stated as deceased at this point, but I don't know when he actually died.  My father was one of twins.  I think his twin sister was named Dorothy and she died in early childhood.  Charles came north with my father and two of my father's siblings Joanna and Ellen(poss Helen), both older than my father.  I only know my father was a young boy when Charles brought him north to either Manchester or Salford and that he was the youngest of Charles' children, but know nothing about any of the other children who stayed behind in the South, or what happened to Emily.  My father's first marriage in Salford was in 1934 to a Martha Chapman.  I wonder if perhaps there were any details on this marriage certificate about Charles and if he may have been alive when my father married his first wife.  Martha died in 1936 aged 28 and they had one daughter Emily born June 14 1934,now also sadly deceased. She died in Texas in August 1997.  Given that my parents married in 1939 perhaps there may be something to give us a lead from there.  My parents are both deceased and are Sidney Young and Mary Agnes Young nee Burns.  I can't think of any more info that I can give, but of course if I think of anything else I will send it to you.  Thanks again or your interest and your reply Paul.  God bless you.  Here's hoping hey?

Kind regards

Hi Paul.  Yes I've seen this before.  That is in fact my brother who put that info on the site.  As I said, none of the info we have is definite.   The only definite info is on my late father's birth certificate.  Is there a St Catherine's index in Bath do you know?  With details of my father's birth, maybe we could find out from that, the definite date of birth of both of his parents and subsequently his other ancestors from there.  It is free isn't it to search the records in the St Catherine's index?  I know the one in Manchester is, but you do have to book the time to do the search. Is this possible do you think.  Thanks once more for your interest and help.  It is greatly appreciated.  God bless.  Here's hoping!

Mary,
so far i have found,

B.M.D.
Martha A. Chapman=Sidney Young,Salford,8d,578,march QTR 1934
Sidney Young,Birth,Bath,5c,479.SepQTR,1909
Dorothy Young,Birth,Bath,5c,480,SepQTR,1909

1901 Census;
Charles Young,29,Somerset,wrington,somerset,clevedon,porter

this suggests he married between march1901 and 1909,however if there really were another 6 children(average 1 per year) this should mean they married between 1901-1903/4.
This is where i will search st catherines index

Paul
