Parish Registers - Martin/Baird - Completed.
« on: Friday 22 June 07 19:11 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information on the Birth and/or Marriage
of Thomas Martin and Janet Baird about 1830 in Kirkintilloch.  So far as I know Thomas was born about 1795
in Kirkintilloch, Son of William Martin and Helen Wilson.
Janet was born about 1811 in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire,
Daughter of John Baird and Janet Cleland.
Any information regarding this family would be most
appreciated.  I have Thomas and Janet on the 1851 Census
living in Glasgow (High Church) with nine (9) Sons and a
John Baird 27 Brother of Janet.  All children of Thomas and
Janet were born in Old Monkland.

I looked through the OPRs yesterday evening.

Thomas was born on 26th March 1795 and baptized on 29th.

Janet was born and baptized on 27th January 1811. Her father was a farmer.

There is a large gap in the marriage records for Kirkintilloch; there is nothing around 1830. Are you certain they married there?

The reocrds for Old Monkland are complete, but I could not find a Martin/Baird marriage.

Justin,
Thanks for your help.  No, I am not positive that they
were married in Kirkintilloch.  I am basing that on the fact
that they had nine Sons born in that town from 1830
until 1848.  Only their last child George was born in Glasgow on 21 May 1851 shortly after the 1851 Census
on which the whole family apprears in Glasgow.  So I must
assume they moved some time between 1848-1850.
This is new territory for me, so I must confess that I am
working in the dark for the most part.  I appreciate your
effort and can only conclude that if records are missing I
am out of luck.  It would seem more likely that they would
be married in Old Monkland, birthplace of Janet Baird, but
is by no means a certainty.

Hi,

I have just found your post regarding Thomas Martin and Janet Baird, I know it has been quite some time since you posted it, but these two people are in my family tree, and was wondering if I could help in any way?

Yekal,
Thank you for your reply.  It has been quite some time but I never give up on any of my posts to RoosChat.  My Great Grandfather Alexander Taylors second wife was an
Agnes Eadie.  A Sister of Agnes Mary Eadie married Robert Martin in 1861.  Robert Martin was of course rthe Son of Thomas Martin and Janet Baird.  Hope that makes some sense to you.  I follow up on collateral relatives at times to answer questions which bother me and that is the reason for my post on this subject.  My name is Robert Taylor and I live in Ontario Canada.  I would be pleased to hear from you if think it worth while.

Hi Robert,

I am related through David Martin, younger brother of Robert, not sure what information you are short of, but I can`t get any further back than Thomas Martin and Janet Bairds parents.
Coincidentally some years ago while researching the Martin side I got in contact with a relative who I didn`t know existed, also from the same David Martin and she lives in Oshawa Canada.

Yekal.
Thanks for your reply.  I am assuming you knew about the Eadie connection?  Don't know if you can fill in a few deaths on the Martin side for me.  Thomas Martin b.1879, Janet Baird Martin b.1811, Robert Martin b.1837, David Martin b.1843 & Isabella Martin b.1844.
your comments about Oshawa are interesting.  A Cousin of mine living in England had some info about a relative in that part of Ontario but I have no idea what the name was.
Do you have the surname of the lady in question?  I have a Daughter who lives in Oshawa
perhaps she has relatives nearby and does not know it.
None of the above is critical, but anything you can tell me would be appreciated.

Debbie,
Hello and thanks for your message.  I live in Elliot Lake and the connection is through marriage, more or less collateral and no blood relationship.  My Grandfather Alexander Taylor maried an Eadie and as you have probably read in the foregoing message there is a connection there between Eadie and Martin.  Also, Sister of my Grandfather Robert Taylor
married a William Martin in 1894.  William, Son of Robert Martin and Mary Eadie, born
1864 in Glasgow, died 1929 in Glasgow. His spouse Elizabeth McGregor (Lizzie) Taylor born Glasgow 1869 died Lennoxtown, Stirling 1945.
Please let me know if any of this is of interest to you.  Nice to hear from you.
