Llandyssil/Berriew/Kerry Graveyards
« on: Thursday 21 June 07 20:11 BST (UK) »
I am researching the family of Shutt/Shute in Llandyssil and Berriew and possibly Kerry.  Has anybody got any records of the graveyards in these areas.   Any help appreciated as I heard that there was a tombstone for one of these but that it had fallen over.  Not much to go on but hoping someone lives nearby and could check.  I am looking for the period late 1700s to late 1800s

Hello

I don't have access to such records, but the Montgomeryshire Genealogical Society produce Memorial Inscription booklets for various parishes in Montgomeryshire.

From their list:

Llandyssil:  Parish Church, Bethesda & Moriah Presbyterian Chapels (1996)
£4 + £1 p&p

Berriew:  Parish Church, Ebenezer Congregational Chapel, St. John's Church Fron, Jerusalem Presbyterian Chapel, Mount Zion Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Pant y Ffridd Mission Chapel, Pentre Llifior Wesleyan Methodist Chapel & Providence Wesleyan Methodist Chapel (1999, 2nd edition 2003)
£6 + £1 p&p

No booklet for Kerry as yet, but new ones are added all the time.

"Booklets in this series normally include a full checked transcript of every memorial, a photograph (colour in the latest editions) or drawing of each church and chapel included, an introductory preface about each church and chapel, a plan of each church, chapel and burial ground showing the location and type of all memorials, and an index of names and monumental masons.

Transcripts of parish churches and chapels marked in BOLD typeface include a burial ground."

Hope this helps!

Georgina,

I live in Kerry so I can go down to the graveyard and take a look around the gravestones for you if you'd like (I can do that this week).  I'd offer to do Llandyssil too, but I went there last year looking for Trows and there wasn't a gravestone in sight at the church!  I could possibly do Berriew when I have some spare time, but that would most likely be at a weekend.

Hi Lloydy and Nixtee,

Thank you Lloydy for taking the time to reply to me.  I will look into the references you gave me.

Nixtee,

It is very kind of you to offer and I should be very grateful for any information you might find but please do not put yourself out.  I have spent ages looking round graveyards in my area for people to no avail as the stones are  so worn out.  I did hear mention though that there was a fallen over tombstone for one of the Shute/Shutt family.  I am writing up my family history for my children as a story as I know if anything happend to me all my census records and certificates would just be chucked out.  I felt by writing it up it would be kept and am trying to make it more interesting with pictures, social history and facts.  So once again thank you for the offer and if you find anything it would be lovely but please don't  put yourself to to much trouble.

Georgina

Hi Georgina,

It's certainly no problem for me to take a look around Kerry Churchyard for you.  I'll take a walk down there after work one evening this week, depending on the weather.  I'll see what I can find for you.

Take care,

Nikki.
