Annie Hartgrove (my Gt Grandmother) was born in Stamford Rivers Essex in 1861. The 1881 Census shows her as Ann Hartgrove born Stamford Rivers 1861 and then working as a domestic servant for Joseph Parkhurst a draper and clothier of High Street, Chipping Ongar Essex. Later Annie Hartgrove married a blacksmith of Epping by the name of (Harry?) Southgate and he came from the corn trading firm of Walter Southgate and Son of Ipswich but turned his back on that. This (Harry) Southgate died in 1891 when my Grandmother Rose Alice Southgate was five. (Ann Hartgrove was her mother)..They also had a Daisy Southgate and then there was George Harry Southgate. Annie Hartgroved died in Walthamstow on 9th April 1949 and is buried in Queen's Road Cemetery Walthamstow

No. I have merely followed up that which was taught to me by my Grandmother Rose Alice Southgate born Epping 1886. Her mother was the former Annie Hartgrove. Her, Annie's father, was Daniel Hartgrove. His son was Thomas William Hartgrove (Uncle Tom) of Stanford Rivers and he worked as a horseman on a local farm. Dan Hartgrove is alive in the 1911 census. Emily I think might also have been Dan's daughter and certainly lived in Dan's cottage as did Tom until he died in or after WW1. Emily was living in the cottage in the 1930s for sure and I think died in 1948/9 and I feel is buried as Emily Fish in Stamford River church on te left as you go in the main gate. I have put what I know and some pics on this Hartgrove-Harknett website but there is more I have put elsewhere on Hartgroveon this website but I canot find it!....I have also linked the Hartgrove line with the Fryer line of Hempnall Norfolk but as regards Hartgrove unless you can find what I have put down elsewhere on them in RootsChat then that is it. I am struggling to repatriate a photo of Annie Hartgrove from USA! The Hartgrove cottage is diagonally to the right from the Green Man pub in Toot Hill Stamford Rivers. On the far corner of the green there is a thuck hedge and some Essex timber cottages. Dan Hartgrove's is the one on the end (left) and has a small "L" shaped garden. I will try and add a photo if the system lets me! (known as Uncle Tom's Cabin!)

I will now try and put up a pic of Rose Alice Southgate whose mother was the former Annie Hartgrove born Stamford Rivers Essex 1861. Rose was my Nana Fryer. The pic shows her aged about 17 in 1901 or so. Annie Hartgrove and Rose are very similar so if you see my Nana Fryer you see the former Annie Hartgrove. I shall now put up pic of Annie Hartgrove (later Mrs Southgate and at the end Annie Hobs) 1861-1949..

I shall now put up pic of Annie Hartgrove (Mrs Southgate then finally Mrs (Granny) Hobbs when she married Ernie Hobbs probably in Chelmsford Essex some time after 1891 when her first husband died and he had been a blacksmith in Epping.

Wedding group photo shows Annie Hartgrove born Stanford Rivers Toot Hill Essex 1861 later Annie Southgate later Annie Hobbs at the wedding of her Grandaughter some time in the 1940s. Annie Hobbs (nee Hartgrove) is second from right all in black. On her right is her daughter Daisy Bell but born Daisy Southgate in Epping Essex. "Granny Hobbs" (nee Annie Hartgrove) is Daisy's mother and my maternal Great Grandmother. The 1861 census shows Ann Hartgrove born Stanford Rivers 1861 as being a domestic servant in the house of Joseph Parkhurst draper and clothier of High Street Chipping Ongar Essex. Also shown is Daisy Bell (nee Daisy Southgate in WW2 volunteers uniform)
