Waterloo

Hi Folks,

Is anyone able to do a look-up on the Waterloo Rolls (or even Trafalgar)? 

Joseph BASTOW was a boot and shoemaker, born c. 1789 in Bingley, Yorkshire, d. 1850's in Meltham, Yks. and was a member of the Household Cavalry Life Guards.  Two of his 15 (!) children were named Horatio Nelson and Wellington, and on retiring from the army he opened a pub in Meltham called "The Life Guardsman".

Any info on him would be much appreciated.

Hi,
I can give you some info from the Waterloo roll (but perhaps muddy the waters as well  )
The good news is he's easily found, but he's not Life Guards. He's listed instead under the Royal Horse Guards. Private Joseph Bastow, serving in Captain J.Thoyts Troop, RHG.

The Life Guards and the RHG were separate regiments but both part of the Household Cavalry.
In the Military General Service medal roll there's no Joseph Bastow listed, but there is a Pte John Bastow, RHG (who could be the same man mistranscribed) who served at Vittoria (1813) and Toulouse (1814).

No Joseph Bastow at Trafalgar

Hi Neil,

Thank you so much for your speedy reply confirming Joseph was at Waterloo.   So he was in the Royal Horse Guards - perhaps he named his pub the Life Guardsman  as it was catchier, or shorter to paint on the sign!  The John Bastow you found may also be him, or perhaps a relative I haven't found yet.

Hi there,
Of the four Troops of Horse Guards, Thoyts Troop suffered the highest casualty rate with 20 men killed or missing from a nominal strength of 77 at the start of the battle.
If, in addition,  the total number of men who were wounded, unhorsed, captured, or non-combatant is added it is difficult to imagine more than a handful of men left at the end of day.
