FUNERAL of Mr. S. ROUND
The interment of the remains of the late Mr. Samuel Round, of 39, Victoria-road South, took place at the Highland Road Cemetery on Saturday. The deceased who was organist at St. Thomas’s Church for several years, was very popular, and a large crowd of sympathising friends gathered at the graveside. At the cemetery gates the remains, which were enclosed in a polished elm coffin with brass furniture, were met by the choir in surplices, who led the cortege to the church where the funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Canon E. P. Grant, Vicar of Portsmouth. Mr. Green, one of the deceased’s pupils presiding at the organ. The chief mourners were the deceased’s father and brother and two sons. Other followers included several local organists and a number of Mr. Round’s pupils. There were many floral wreaths. One was sent by members of St. Thomas’s Choir and another by the Vicar. At the conclusion of the service the choir, standing by the graveside, sung “Peace, Perfect Peace”. The funeral arrangements were conducted by Messrs. Russel and Co, Albert Road, Southsea.
There are a number of other reports, earlier when he played at various services-St Thomas's was the church that the Portsmouth Corporation worshipped at in the 1890's, the references, and they are hard to find seem to start around 1890. Have sent you a PM so you can have a try yourself!
