Now what?
« on: Sunday 17 June 07 02:49 BST (UK) »
My Hill lineage from Somerset has been traced back to 1808 with the birth of William Hill in Taunton.  He married Maria Bryant in 1832 in Bridgwater.  All this took place before civil registration, so records are hard to find.  Nevertheless, a distant cousin was in Somerset recently and checked out various records, finding a William Hill being baptised in 1808 at St. Mary's church in Taunton.  This all lines up nicely, though not proven as yet.  However, the 1808 William Hill has his parents listed as William and Sarah, no occupations or maiden name given.  Does this make it the end of the line then?  No marriages listed in St. Mary's either for William and Sarah, so what to do next?  Where to look?  I guess everyone faces the inevitable end of the trail at some point and wonder if this is it.  Any thoughts on where to proceed from here?

I can't say for sure but it probably is.  My cousin was just there and found nothing, so can I ask where you found that?  Obviously she was looking in the wrong place.  Are there any more details?  And, to whom would I send for a certified copy?  I may be jumping to conclusions but this all fits so nicely.  Thank you for this a million times over.

Thanks to you both.  I just figured when my cousin was there and drew a blank it was the end of the road.  Now however a new avenue has opened up, thanks to your kindness.  Must get on this asap!

As usual I messed up.  The William Hill we wanted to trace had Wm and Mary listed as his parents, not Wm and Sarah.  Darn.  Knew it was too good to be true.  I am busy tracking other possibilities thru the links you guys listed so you never know I guess.  Grrr, it was all fitting so nicely.  But once again if Wm and Mary were intinerant workers it may be only that they had Wm at Taunton by chance and then settled.  Gotta keep digging but if anyone has any other ideas I' d be glad to pursue them.  In the meantime, back to the links and more reading.
