I can confirm that Alexander Muir Jnr. came to Australia and lived in Victoria with Mary Graham. Not sure when they arrived and on what ship, but was before 1841. I am doing the family tree for my cousin and although there is a bit of a tangled web to the story, according to the Victorian BMD records, Ebenezer Graham Muir (b: C. 1852), son of Alexander Muir Jnr. and Mary Graham, married Jessica Whitley (b: C. 1853) on 16 July 1871 in Melbourne, Victoria. The records show that four children were born in Australia to Alexander & Mary, Catherine (1841), James (1843), Mary (1847) and Ebenezer Graham (1852).

Ebenezer & Jessica had six children, Jessica Blanche (b: 1872), Ebenezer Alexander (b: 1874), Whitley Ernest (b: 3 August 1876) my cousin's line, Percival Victor (b: 1878), Mary Graham (b: 1881), and Beatrice Denise (b: 1884).

I understand that Jessica was born about 1851 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland, and from the Victorian Incoming Passenger Lists, I have found three Whitley children arrived in October 1858 on vessel "Red Jacket". There was Chas (probably Charles) aged 10, Jessie aged 7 and John aged 11. I would love to find more information about Whitley family in Scotland if anyone can help.

All of Ebenezer & Jessica's children were registered at birth as Muir's, but all died as Woods. Jessica divorced Ebenezer in 1891 and married John William Woods in 23 September 1891. John was Commissioner for Railways and Roads, and Member of the Lower House in the Victorian Government from 1871-1892 when he died on 2nd April 1892. Whitley Ernest was my cousin's grandfather.

Would love to receive any further details of all the Scottish ancestors of this line.
regards,

Peter

Hi Jill,
Thanks for all the info on the Alexander Muir family line so far. It is a great help and fills in a few holes in the big picture. I would appreciate receiving any certificate copies that you could send. Based on the details that you have sent, this makes your James, my cousins Gr. Grand Uncle. It's nice to find links to the line still alive.

I am happy to send to you details of the Muir/Woods Australian line so far, and would like to know anything on the other family members details here in Australia. I am on the Sunshine Coast and the Woods families are here as well as Canberra. Look foward to hearing from you soon.
Cheers Peter

Hi Jill,
I just noticed there was a Margaret Muir aged 25 also on the list of Assisted Passengers on the Utopia. Do you know if she was part of this family also?
Cheers
Peter
