Walker Family Whicham / Sylecroft
« on: Tuesday 12 June 07 18:12 BST (UK) »
Can any one help with information on the Walker family, my ancestor is Thomas Walker 1841, census shows him living at Sylecroft with parents, father is William Walker, mother is Franny Walker (nee Brocklebank) also present in the house hold is grandparent William Brocklebank.
I am looking for other brothers / sisters to Thomas, who having married Ann Atkinson eventually moved up to Picket Howe Farm outside of Egremont and then into Golden Lion Whitehaven. Does any one have any info on Kellet House in Whicham, i think one of his brothers adopted this small mansion.

Any information further back on the Brocklebank side would be welcome

Thanks

The 1841 census has Fanny born c1786 but, according to the IGI, Fanny might have been born Frances Brocklebank, baptised 06/10/1782 at Whicham, daughter of William Brocklebank and Agnes Walton who married 19/05/1782 at Whicham (when William was about 26)

As your ancestors seem to be of some substance, unlike mine usually listed as "husbandman" or " miner", you may like to investigate
www.historicaldirectories.org which I think is run by Leicester or Loughborough Universities.
It is not the easiest of sites to navigate round but if you get to "place " or "location" and click on roughly cumbria, a whole list of directories comes up. If you click on one with roughly the year you're interested in and then enter your place or name in the search box, you are in. For instance Mannix 1847 directory and "brocklebank" brought up 21 references. I don't have the time or background knowledge to help you further but I have spent several weekends tracing upper class members of the family.

Thanks for the information on Francis Brocklebank. Index's from 1861 show that a William Brocklebank Walker is living in Kellet House (Whicham) I'm wondering if this is the Eldest son of Francis (nee Brocklebank) & William Walker, who would then be elder brother to my gr gr gr grandfather Thomas Walker.

thanks

Bob

Thanks also for the directory information, these are very useful I've found other lines of my family in them, I could spend hours searching through them!

I have a Mary Brocklebank in my tree from around that area born around 1796.  Probably a link with her somewhere along the lines. Also lots of Brockbanks from around that area.

Hi there!  Don't have anything useful to contribute to your search really, but just had to drop by to say that I was kicking over Silecroft beach last weekend and found a brick there with 'W B Walker Brickworks - Sylecroft' stamped in it.  Added it to my collection of bricks that I have found from round the area which I use as doorstops. My Mum saw it and said that Grandad used to have a heap of those in his back yard.  She said that Will Walker lived in Kellet House in Silecroft right behind our then home (we had Kellet Cottage just behind Kellet House for 40 years) and that Walkers owned the brick kiln on what is now Silecroft Caravan site up the road.  The clay was dug out from what is now the duck pond end of the caravan site, and the sand was brought up from the beach at the end where my caravan now stands.  Perfect site for a brickworks with plentiful clay, water and sand. She said my Great Gran remembered Walker's Bricks were all laid out in the sunshine on the field to dry before kilning, right in the place where our caravan stands now!   :)
