Glasgow Theatres
« on: Tuesday 12 June 07 11:15 BST (UK) »
I am having problems finding anything concrete on my gr gr grandfather. Still not sure if he is the right person but I have found a Joseph Holley (Holly) in Britain who was born in the US. If this is my Joseph his wife is living down in Hastings Sussex on 1901 census with her mother and her son, she is still down as married.
On various certificates my Joseph is down as a vocalist / professional / carpenter (which is apparently the line some unsuccessfull artistes went down).
I now have a Joe Holley living at 31 R'Glen Rd Glasgow Gorbals on the Scottish 1901 census, born US, actor...there are various other lodgers from the US, actors and also head of the family's daughter appears to be in theatre too....I was wondering if there would have been any theatres in that area or would they have been in the city of Glasgow...
I am trying to go down as many paths as I can. Have tried searching on Glasgow Uni site but none of the names on the census are on there. I have written to the music hall society, they have no Joseph Holley (Holly) on their directories and have now emailed national library of Scotland to see if they can refer me to a Glasgow theatre historian....

I appreciate any help on this subject

Regards
Liz

The address you mention in Gorbals is not far from the city centre in any case, 5 or 10 minute walk.
Off the top of my head the nearest theatre would be the Citizens Theatre but that wasn't established until just before or after WW2.

I'm at work just now so don't have time to look properly but try looking through the following sites.

The Virtual Mitchell Library - Theatres

The Glasgow Story - Theatres

Hope you find what you're looking for.

Another link to a pamphlet advertising the Theatre which became the Citizens.  This is a few minutes away from Old Rutherglen Road.

In The Glasgow Story site.  Search for "the glasgow programme"
This should take you to an old map showing various theatres in Glasgow.  Looks to be circa 1918 but it be useful to google each of them?  Old Rutherglen Road is just outside this map to the South East.

In the time period mentioned there were far more theatres and music halls in Glasgow than there are in the present day.
The Metropole was in Stockwell Street, http://www.arthurlloyd.co.uk/Glasgow/Scotia.htm

The tron theatre (still in existence today),
The britannia halls and several other music halls catering for the masses.
