Burial hunt!
« on: Monday 11 June 07 01:00 BST (UK) »
My 3x Great Grandfather, Thomas Stevenson was born in Brampton Ash in 1819, he died in the Workhouse in Great Bowden (Not sure if thats still Northamptonshire or Leicestershire!)

Anyway....His death certificate says he died in Great Bowden in 1905, and im just wondering if theres an easy way to track down his grave. Any ideas? As im from Swansea, I dont want to have to waste time driving around an area im not familiar with, in the vague hope of striking it lucky.

Unless, thats the only method....
Northants - Stevenson, Smith, Spriggs, Hight, Dodson, Coleman
Swansea - Thomas, Williams, Howell, David, Rees, Griffiths, Jenkins, Bevan
Rutland - Hales
Derbyshire - Harlow, Riley, Pemberton, Aldred
Yorkshire - Stamper, Boyes, Duke
London - Harper, Wallis
Essex - Shelford, Wallis, Read, Stanes
Hertfordshire - Bishop
Cornwall - Johns, Soper, Rowe, Ball, Webb, Dunn, Quintrell, Hain, Oliver
Gloucestershire - Harper, Ash, Gregory, Denman
County Durham - Proud, Duke
Yorkshire - Stamper, Pickering

Hi Vasquez.

I am not sure but perhaps others may help.
But i would of thought he would be buried in either the place he died or the place he was born, but as he died at the workhouse and in other words poor,
the chances are he would be buried in an unmarked grave !
Like my Gt Grandparents, although not in the poor house, they were poor and could not afford the grave, and was buried in the local cemetry in an unmarked grave.

Hi Vasquez

Could try and ring the council office's and see if they can help. I think Great Bowden comes under Leicestershire. Some councils are very helpful some not.

Well i sent away for a list of MARKIE buried at billing rd cemetry in Northampton, which cost me £16 and that was a few years ago, it did give me plot numbers, but it was my father that told me it was an unmarked grave.
Like Ricky says some councils are helpful some are not.

Hi,
Just thought I would pass this on
I live in Northampton and although my grandfathers brother moved to Northampton from Wolverhampton. I rang the council yesterday [Really helpful cough cough]
However in sheer desperation I found the number of the Cemeteries Office!!!  spoke to Lovely Lady who there and then found which Cemetry, Location, plot number and details that his wife & son are all in the same plot. [Bonus] She is actually going to the cemetry today and will put a white marker on it for me so I can go straight to it at the weekend.

The Phone number is 01604 837172

She also gave me details on the dates that the various cemeteries were first used.

Hope this may be of help to you
good luck

That was very lucky! At least some people are really helpful there. Ive just given up with councils as anything I have to do with them seems to end either in:-

a) Me getting angry with some knuckle dragging pen pusher
b) Getting disconnected with their super advanced phone system
c) Getting passed from pillar to post and having to re-explain what ive already told someone else at least 3 times.
d) The "Golden Buck Pass" of 'I'll take your details now sir, and my colleague will call you back!"
e) Headache after banging my head in sheer desperation.

I will email them instead of phoning. See what happens then!

:) Had a quick look on the NBI. No Thomas of your date, but...

Great Bowden is Leics and 'St Peter and St Paul' is the only ref.

Thomas William Stevenson. age 1+. burial date 7th Nov 1864.
Mary Elizabeth Stevenson. age 11. burial date 12 Dec 1878.

Best wishes,
Lesanne.
