Hi
Starting to find you on the family tree. Do you know Katrina?
I have a copy of Jane Temple's  will.
I also believed Jane's sister married a John Watson.
Is it possible to continue our emails privately? I would like to chat about your findings.

Hi Wendy
Our direct line settled in Queensland.
Not sure where the Moss Vale Garbutts fit in.

Hi Inghamite
I do know Katrina. I do not use emails much as I do not have the internet at my home, but I have an email address. Not sure how to send it to you though. I am intending to document as fully as I can the story of Jane and her time in Aus. Researching the places she lived from the moment of her arrival. Be in touch

Hi all,

I stumbled on this post quite by accident, but it seems we are all connected. My Garbutt's came from Bilsdale in Yorkshire....

Hi.
Thanks for the post. I haven't been on this for quite some time.
We will have to compare families.

My ancestor's story:
Thomas Garbutt and Jane Overend had 3 sons – John Edward (1848), Charles Overend (1850) and Arthur Henry (1851) All three boys were born in Norton, Durham. (Jane was born in Yorkshire)
Thomas died in 1858.
In 1863, Jane and her 3 sons emigrated to Australia. Also on board was Lucy Ann (Jane’s sister) and her husband John James Wilson and their 2 young sons – William Overend and John Radcliffe (4). Also on board was Dr Thomas Burnett Temple.
Jane married Dr Temple in Brisbane Queensland in 1864.

Does any of this sound familiar?

Let me know if you think we are linked .

Cheers

Sue

Hi Sue,

For me, this whole part of my tree is a work in progress. My Garbutt's all came from around Middlesbrough/Guisborough/Bilsdale/Whitby in Yorkshire, and although I haven't proved it yet, I am fairly confident that all the Garbutt's from the area, including your Garbutt's, are linked. Norton is a suburb of Stockton-on-Tees, which is in Durham on the north bank of the Tees. My more recent Garbutt's are from Middlesbrough (along with most of the rest of my ancestors on my Paternal side) which is directly opposite Stockton on the south bank of the Tees in Yorkshire. I haven't yet linked your Garbutt's directly to mine, however I have surprisingly linked Jane Overend to my tree. Her Sister Isabel Overend married Joseph Ripley, their Daughter Eleanor Ripley married my 4th Cousin Henry Linskill. Henry was the brother of Author & Poet Mary Jane Linskill from Whitby (Google her).

Will keep you posted, and hope this helps,

Cheers

Chris

Hi Chris
We did not know Jane and Lucy had any other siblings. We cannot locate a birth certificate. Jane's parents were John Overend and Elizabeth Parker. She was born in Bentham between 1823 and 1826. Does this match your information?

Thomas and Jane were married at St Cuthbert's Church in Darlington, Durham on 15 September 1847.

My husband and I visited the UK in October last year and stayed at Stockton-on-Tees. It was incredible just being in the same places where my ancestors would have walked. I tried to visit a few cemeteries but Kev (husband) likened it to pulling teeth so didn't really "embrace" the experience !!!

We will have to try and find some more common ancestors.

Sue
