Gover family - Winchester
« on: Saturday 09 June 07 20:07 BST (UK) »
I would be grateful for any earlier information regarding the family of builder William Gover (born circa 1749) in Winchester, Hampshire. He married Elizabeth Parsons (born c 1746) at Winchester in 1774.

Hi Cynfran,

Do you have his burial details and did you know about his will held at Hampshire Record Office?

Elizabeth's father was Samuel Parsons, a cordwainer who appears to have died cir 1788.

I'm wondering if William's father was another William.

Hi Nell
Thank you for your reply. Yes, I have got William Gover's burial details and also a copy of his will thanks. The will was a huge help in connecting him with who I had believed to be his descendents. However, I have not been able to get further back than WG, although I also have a strong feeling that his father was also William.
Regards - Cynfran
PS - Thanks also for confirming the Parsons connection.

Hi Cynfran
Note you were researching GOVER family in Winchester (4 years ago!)
I'm descended from Alexander GODWIN who married Betty GOVER in Winchester in 1763. She is somehow related to the following GOVER families but I have yet to find out how.
1. Wm GOVER from Mottisfont d 1766 m Mary - children Wm 1744, Orange 1754, Mary 1756. Grandchildren Sophia 1777 James 1784 who married Leah (one of Alex. & Betty's daughters), Wm 1781, Edward 1787 & Orange 1800.
2. John Gover also from Mottisfont d 1797 m Rachel HATCHER - children Priscilla b/d 1762, Mary 1762, Elizabeth 1773 and Maria who was a witness at Alex. and Betty's marriage.
Both of these families moved to Winchester and were carpenters. Not sure if there's a connection to your Wm GOVER. Do you know any more? (Sorry if this is a bit long winded.)
Goddo

Do you think Gover and Cover are the same name?  I have Elizabeth Cover, born Hursley 1740, married Thomas Goodchild at Hursley 13 Aug 1763.  I have tried to trace her parentage etc but didn't get far at the Hants RO a couple of years back.  Any chance she could be linked with yours or that you have info?  Toby

I imagine Gover & Cover are essentially the same name. Although I don't think Elizabeth Cover b 1740 is connected to the Govers from Mottisfont that I  mentioned, she does appear on a different part of my tree. As you say she married Thomas Goodchild. He was born 1738 the son of Thomas Goodchild b1695 and Anne Dumper b 1710. Thos and Elizabeth had at least one child Anthony b 1768 who married Mary Humby b 1775. In turn they had a son William Goodchild b 1813 who married Sarah Godwin b 1824. (All this info has come from a Sylvia Dumper in Australia). Sarah Godwin was the daughter of John Godwin b 1788 and Mary Anne Pearce b 1807, whom he married when she was only 16 with the consent of her guardian Wm Lovelock. (Wm Lovelock was married to Priscilla Godwin, John's sister). John and Priscilla were two of the children of Alexander Godwin (my gggg grandfather) and Betty Gover as mentioned in my earlier post. All of this would be a lot better explained by means of a tree - I hope it's clear from my description.
Hope this helps - Goddo.

Great!  Excellent chance contact.  My link is through Emily Goodchild who married John Parker (my greatgrandfather) and was the daughter of Thomas Goodchild (1800-1854) and Charlotte Hannington; he was the son of Thomas Goodchild (1774-1827) & Mary {Martin}; he was the son of Thomas Goodchild (b. 1738) & Elizabeth Cover.  I'd be very pleased to learn more of these Covers/Govers and of the Dumpers.  I don't think I have anything original to add to your information but should be pleased to have sight of your tree and that of the Sylvia you mention.  I've also been trying to contact the owner of 'Goodchilds of Hampshire' website - I don't suppose it could be you?!  I do have a shortversion family tree 'Parker family' on Ancestry where my handle is ajparker42.  I live in Bristol but was considering another visit to Winchester a bit later on this year, it would be great to have further pointers of how to take this subject onward. BFN Anthony Parker.
