Captain Robert Falcon SCOTT of the Antarctic
« on: Friday 08 June 07 17:57 BST (UK) »
Captain Robert Falcon Scott the famous explorer was born in Devonport in 1868.  He was supposedly descended from Scottish ancestry.  I have read that his Gt Gt Grandfather was a man known as Scott of Brownhead (Brownhead is in Argyll & Bute, Scotland) who had his estates seized by the crown after the 1745 Jacobite rebellion.

Scott of Brownhead is supposed to have had a son (name unknown) born in 1745 who moved to Devon and built the family home of Outlands.

I am trying to find any information about Capt Scott's Scottish roots.  If anyone has any information about this I would be very pleased to hear from them.

hi there,
well what a challenge! having lived on land previously owned by this famous family i just had to do some digging and with a little help from another rootschatter we may well have found a link for you.
in short robert falcon was the son of john edward who was the son  of robert who was also believed to be the son of robert. quite a few of them in this family!
john edward scotts father  was born in chudliegh devon, its there that im a little confused . robert senior (johns father) is listed as being the son of robert scott and rebecca, now i have checked thro poss marriages of that era between a robert scott and a rebecca  , according to the igi there are only 2 possibles , one in devon and one in scotland.
do you have anymore info to work on ? i have all the census returns for outlands so am trying to pick up clues from there
will get back to you soon

Hi thanks for this.  I don't have any other info on this side of Scott's family unfortunately.

My interest in Scott is down to an old family story that my gt grandmother  Mary Elizabeth Hammond was related to Scott - possibly a cousin of his mother.  When I tried to prove this link I found that nobody appeared to have really traced Scott's ancestry properly and I thought, therefore, that it might be worth trying to gather as much info about him as possible to assist other researchers.

If anyone is interested in Scott they may wish to assist me in looking at Mary Elizabeth Hammond's possible link to him.  She was born in Dublin in 1868, the daughter of Thomas Hammond and Agnes Templeton.  I have been unable to trace their marriage and as many of the census records appear not to have survived I cannot even say when or where they were born.  This has frustrated me for some time so if anyone can help here I would be very grateful.(*)

So far I have not found any Irish connections in Scott's direct lines although I have heard stories that some of his family did originate there.  Scott's wife, Edith Bruce, certainly had Irish ancestry, so I guess that the story of a connection could have some truth.

 :)

Hi there, this may help a little if you think the family link may be via Robert Falcon Scott's mother. This is what I've trawled on the net:

John Edward Scott married Hannah Cuming in 1862

Hannah Cuming was born Plymouth 1841 -died 1924

Hannah's parents were William Bennett Cuming of Plymouth [Lloyds Surveyor, Commissioner of Pilotage, Plymouth Chamber of Commerce] whose death is registered in Stoke Damarel in 1886 and Esther Day Wilson born Padstow Cornwall aby 1805 to George Wilson and Patty. Esther Day Cuming's death is registered in Stoke Damarel in 1892.

Hannah Cuming had one brother [not sure if she had any sisters?], Admiral Henry [Harry] Cuming who married twice. In 1871 to Marion Harby who died in 1873, daughter of Mt T Harby of Stratford and secondly to Mary, daughter of Mt W P Beech of Stifford Essex

best wishes

Hi MarMnkly

Thank you for this information.  Hopefully it will help me to establish the link between Mary Elizabeth Hammond and Capt Scott.

hi there andrew,
just had someone check out the bvri's in scotland and they came up with this for your "scott from brownhead"it seems this was the only likely one for that time frame.

robert scott  birth 15th september 1744
christening 16th september 1744   adrossan ayrshire

father; robert scott
mother; janet wright

after getting the world and his friends searching we found that brownhead was a little village in ayr
so perhaps robert moved across to argyle and that was why he was known as "scott from brownhead"! it sounds plausible dont you think?
hope this helps

Hi Krissy

Thank you very much for this.  I think you may have found him!

I am starting to get quite a good picture of Captain Robert Falcon Scott's ancestry.  Unfortunately, I have been unable to link my family lines into his but part of my difficulty here is that I have been unable to find the marriage of my gt gt grandparents, Thomas Hammond & Elizabeth Templeton.  As most of the census records for Dublin do not appear to have survived I have really come up against a brick wall here.  Not sure how I will ever solve this conundrum unless someone who reads this knows of this couple already.  Aaaaaaaaaarrrghhhh!!!!!!

Time to take 5 I think!
