Margaret Mary MacDonald - birth look up please
« on: Friday 08 June 07 17:22 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm sorry this is my first visit to the Irish site and not sure how to ask for a look-up or information, so forgive me if I should have tried somewhere else.

I need to know where I can find the birth record for Margaret Mary MacDonald born 31st August 1915-1919 (there are conflicting years).

I know she was born in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Roscommon, Station Road, Lilukin, Cr-on-Shannon.  Her parents who lived there were james and Agnes MacDonald.

Are there any free BMD records online for Ireland?  Where does one go to find out a birth record?

If would be so good to find something out about her.

Thanks.

Diana,
There are no online BMD records for those years. You could request a copy birth certificate from the GRO in Roscommon, there are downloadable application forms at http://www.groireland.ie/apply_for_a_cert.htm You would need a credit card, if you request a photocopy it should not be expensive, quoting the dates that you have.

Alternatively if you have a local LDS Family History Centre they may possess the microfilmed index to births, or you could request them in. Film number 101076 covers 1915-1916,  101078 has 1919-1920.

Best wishes

Peter

It is quite possible your local LDS library will not have microfilms of Irish records in stock. Keep in mind that at the period you are searching for the index to birth registrations are broken into quarters and there are numerous films of the actual certificates.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Nick,

Thanks for your message - What a lovely surprise to hear from you.  And what a small world this is.  I was researching this lady on behalf of a contact via email - Gerald McForeman.  He is Margaret Mary's son.  I have tried emailing him to see if he knows you (I assume you must be Gerald's son?) but the email bounced back, unknown, so he must have changed his email address.

We initially started off discussing Warley Hospital in which I have a personal interest and somehow I got involved with doing some searches on Margaret Mary and eventually found her death record.  Gerald bought the certificate and it was the right one so he was very pleased with the result.  We corresponded for a few months but once all that could be established was dealt with our emails ended.  Looking back at my records we last corresponded a year ago exactly - how strange!  Anyway, please confirm that you are connected to Gerald and if you are then please do pass on my regards to him.

Best wishes

Hello Diana
Thanks for getting back to me. Yes Gerald is my father. I actually contacted him after I sent you the email and he explained the situation.

Coincidently we have very recently returned from Ireland on a fact finding/relative meeting holiday concerning my grandmother!
We looked up her DOB in the Irish records office and found out it was 1913 not 1918 as on her passport; must have been a transcription error of an'8' for a '3'!

My father sends you his best regards and thank you once again for your invaluble assistance in tracing his mother.

Best wishes for the future

Nick

Hi Nick,

Thanks for replying and glad you and your father are still researching!  Also pleased you have found out more information.  Pleased to know that all is well with your father too.  Tell him to remember 'nothing is as it seems - always think outside the box!'.

Best wishes for the future

Hi Jess

She was born in Carrick-on-Shannon in Ireland in 1913. She married Robert Foreman in 1940 and moved to King's Lynn in Norfolk, England. She had one child, a boy named *, born the day after the war ended - 9th May 1945. * is my father so I would be very interested if you have some connection!
Regards
Nick
