Ann Wade - 1841 Census
« on: Wednesday 06 June 07 13:48 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm hoping someone with a little bit of knowledge of the are my be able to help me identify the correct Ann Wade in the 1841 census.

Here's what I know about her:

She was born circa 1828 in Barton;
her father's name was James;
she married Christopher Smith in Middleton Tyas in 1850.

I've found a James Wade living in Barton in 1841 with his wife and a couple of kids but not Ann.

There's a number of possibilities in the census but I don't know the geography that well so maybe someone out there can steer me in the right direction.

Hi Doug,

Barton, although in Yorkshire is very close to the border of Co. Durham.

This one appears to be a close possibility, see what you think .. ..

1841 census:
HO107/304/1, folio 5, page 4

Durham, Denton

Thomas Davison senr. 65, Blacksmith, Y
James senr. 30, Blacksmith, Y
Elizabeth, 30, N
Thomas jnr. 6, Y
Richard, 6, Y
James jnr. 5, Y
John, 3, Y
William, 2 mths. Y
/
Ann Wade, 11, N
//

It looks as though Ann has not been included in the family unit.

Denton is 6 miles away from Barton and Ann is listed as not being born in county.

Kind regards,

Pels
.

Hi Pels

Thanks for the information - it probably is her given the relatively short distance from Barton. It's a shame the 1841 census didn't include a bit more data - such as place of birth or occupation - but we can only work with what we are given - it's better than nothing.

Once again many thanks

Having noticed a Wade in Middleton Tyas, wonder if your Anne was related to one of my ancestors?

I have been able to trace my family back to Middleton Tyas, to Henry and Hannah Wade in the 1790's.

Known children of above, all born in Middleton Tyas, are:
Richard b 1791
George b 1793
Anna b 1795

I am descended from George.

George moved to Hereford and married Margaret Ball (dau of James Ball and Mary Mathias) - though the wedding was in Yorkshire, and they had the following children (in Hereford):.

Thomas Falkingham Wade       chr30jan    1826      Lugwardine
Joseph Henry Wade               b1828, Hereford
Anna Wade                            chr  6th June 1832 in Lugwardine

Joseph Henry's Certificate of Baptism shows that his father (George) was 'an artist'.

George was widowed and later went to live at the Steam Packet Inn, in Newport, Gwent. He married the owner's(?) widow, Elizabeth Hughes (of North Nibley, Glos)...Thomas also married one of her daughters!

What do you think?

Hi

I believe my Wades were originally from Hipswell and moved to Barton St Marys. I don't know if there is a link. Sorry.

Since my original post have discovered that "Margaret Ball"
was in fact born "Margaret Ball Mathias" and her parents were Joseph and Mary (nee Harries).

Joseph's mother was born "Margaret Ball" hence an unusual middle name for her grand-daughter which I took to be part of a double-barrelled surname.

George's mother's maiden name was "Falkingham", which was subsequently used as a middle name for many generations of boys (though none in my direct line).

This just in case an interested party stumbles across these postings.
