Dates for identification please
« on: Wednesday 06 June 07 12:34 BST (UK) »
Hi Folks

I have a photo that I have been told is my GGrandmother Mary Gibbon (nee Lazenby).  I have no reason to doubt this, except I have found a copy of the photo in an old family bible and it is beside a picture of her son-in-law.  I am starting to wonder if it is maybe a picture of her daughter and not herself.  I only have photo's of her daughter in later years, so was wondering if anyone could tell me when the younger picture might have been taken to check if it is her or her daughter

Mary Lazenby born 1823
or her daughter
Mary jane Gibbon born 1847

I will also attach a picture of her daughter Mary Jane in later life so you can check if you think they are the same person or mother and daughter

I would appreciate your opinions please  ;D ;D

Cheers

Lones

Modified: sorry, way too big  :P :P

Hi Lones  :)

OK, well the first picture looks like it dates from the late 1860s or early 1870s  (probably 1868-1872 or so).  So if it was Mary born 1823, she would be at least 45 in the picture, which is definitely possible.  However, she doesn't look very old, so could equally be Mary Jane born 1847 - she would be 21 in 1868.  I'm tending towards the mother, but it's really hard to tell.

The lady in the other picture looks very much like the first lady - the ear does look quite different but being the opposite way round I can't say for sure  :-\

Sorry, I don't think I've been much help!  ;D

Cheers

I had my generations wrong. Mary Lazenby is my gggrandmother and Mary Jane is my ggrandmother - Sorry about that, long day.... :-\

Modified - Cause the silly program wont let me reply??  >:( >:(

Gorgeous Caz, thank you.  I admit, I have played with it too, it is a fabulous dress, but who did it belong to, that's the question???

Here is a comparison in the hopes Prue can decide for me..... nothing like passing the  buck is there ?  ;) ;)

Just my 2 cents Lones...I think the length of the nasal septum, and the corners of the mouth are different on the two women. Lovely pics, though, what a dress!!!

I agree with China,  they are two different women.  Most definitely related though - look at those cheekbones!  :o

Hi Prue and China

Thank you for your informed opinions, I appreciate it.  I am happy I have pictures of the two ladies, and not just one  ;D.  I started to doubt when I realised it was funny the way the pictures were placed in the bible and the fact that Mary Jane's dad was loaded  :-\.  People with money usually trotted in and out of the photographers studios with great frequency and I have none of her as a child etc.   I also noticed a resemblance between the two ladies and thought it might be an earlier picture of her.  I am glad it's not as I like having a picture of both.

I agree China, I love the dress, no idea what happened to it, probably off somewhere with her husbands money, cause I never saw any of that either  ;) ;)

Thank you Caz and Jim, lovely clean ups, I really appreciate your time and effort spent on them, they look great  8) 8)

Cheers all
