LANGRIDGE Edward, Completed thanks
« on: Tuesday 05 June 07 13:51 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find details of Edward's family.  He was transported to Western
Australia (Swan River Colony) Convict No. 1006 arrived on the 'Marion'
on 30/1/1852.  His crime was burglary with assault. He was born ~1825.

Edward wrote several letters from the Fremantle Convict Establishment to
his "Dear Wife"  He made reference to a child, a girl, possibly 'Fanney'.

A letter may have been addressed to Mrs Susan Langridge, Thurham, Kent,
near Seven Oaks.  Another had "try Hiedeu, Kent near Tumbridge".

He referred to his wife's brother William, in South Australia, and to his wife's
sister Elisebeth.

Can anyone help please.

I had started to have a look for info on this topic, but when I tried to post it was locked. Why is this?
Am I not allowed to reply? Is it just an error or some serious misdemeanour!

any how
I have found a marraige between Edward Langridgeand Susannah Reading in the DecQ 1843 Sevenoakes area.
(There is also a marriage for Elizabeth Reading DecQ 1840 Sevenoakes - her sister?)
On the 1841 census there is a Reading family living with their father, Robert. The children include Richard, Susannnah, William and Sarah. Living in Codsheath, Sevenoakes. (includes William her brother?)
I don't know if these are related or just a coincidence!

hope this may help

Hi Rozzy

Have you seen the website for Fremantle Prison?
http://www.fremantleprison.com/history/ConvictsAndShips/convict_display.cfm

This lists Edward with the ship information that you gave. It also says that he was married to ANN RALPH and has one child.

Hullo to all who have replied.  I'm afraid I don't see how I can do it
individually so please forgive this group 'hug'.

To Jane, I apologise for the locked file, I must have done that in error.
Thank you for the information on the marriage of Susannah, she certainly
could be the wife.  There was only one reference to 'Susan' in an address.

To Daisy Petal, thanks for your welcome  :))
This could certainly be his family, although he didn't seem to know that he
might have had a son who would have been born after his imprisonment.
The age of the daughter fits.

To Stuizzy, thanks for the website and yes, I have all the Fremantle Prison
information.  Edward and Ann (Ralph) had 8 children in Western Australia,
so it appears he 'married' her here. (I am in Western Australia!).
His records showed that he had a wife and child, and the prison has cheated
a little and retrospectively called her 'Ann' because she was his wife here.

Edward wrote letters to his 'Dear Wife' from the prison, and referred to
a daughter perhaps called 'Fanney'.  (writing very difficult to read in places).
There was a photocopy of something that could have been an envelope address;
to "Mrs Susan Langridge Thuram Kent near Seven Oaks", and another part said,
"try Hiedeu Kent near Tumbridge".

I wonder what happened to Susan and the children, as she did not reply to
his letters. He makes reference to that in his letters, as he pleads with her to
go and see the 'gentlemen' and have them prove his innocence!  He continually asked her to come out to Western Australia, but it appears she didn't.

Edwards parents were possibly Joseph and Binni (Pinner) Langridge.

Thank you all for your researching so far
Rozzy

Am struggling to find anything in the 1841/1851 census that fits the information you have given.

The  place with the nearest spelling to Thuram is Thurnham but that is near Maidstone not Sevenoaks.

As to Hiedeu, I'm just not sure - Hildenborough??

Is there any chance you could scan parts of the envelope so we try to work out the handwriting?

Dear Bearkat

Right after sending you a message re not being able to see "attach a ..."
after having checked "reply" on all the posts, I fell over the correct format
only when I returned to the original list (!)

So, it exists, and you need to know that I found it. Thanks!!

Now all I have to do is create a small enough pic....

Regards
Rozzy

I am attempting to attach a pdf showing the town names.
I will send another separately so that it does not make a too big an
attachment.

Thanks!
