Thank you so much Dinie and Lil - will bookmark that site.  Well, as you can see, it has turned on this morning, so hope it was just a silly loose connection - will let you know how it goes.  Thanks for all your help.

Silas,

I would think that the "loose connection" was the source of your problem re. PC shutting down.

I've never heard of a Trojan taking such control over a PC as to switch it off!

Trojans are pernicious little pests that can lurk undiscovered until a problem arises. You usually only discover them when you are looking for something else.

Aren't computers great?!   - Just remember, Always take a back-up!

Hi Lil.  Funny you should ask, as I have only just been able to get it to turn on !!  I'm hoping my friend will come round and look at all the wiring.  Am off on hols on Tuesday, so may have to wait until after then (2 weeks).  Thanks for asking anyway.

The very first step if you want to rid your computer of a trojan is disable system restore. If you do not disable system restore it will re-insert the trojan the next time you switch the computer on.

Try following the instructions on a site like Symantec.
