How to get copies of death certificates

I have about 6 possible hits for my ggggrandfather Cornelius Halpin that someone on this board sent me from their Irish Death Index list.  The years cover 1872-1912.

I have two questions:

A.  Can I get copies of these?  They're from several different counties.

B. If I can get copies, how do I do it?  By county or is there one specific place where all the records are kept?

I live in New York City and I know in doing my research how easy (but time consuming) it is to get death certificate copies here.  But I don't know the procedures set up in Ireland. US death certificates also contain a wealth of information such as parents names, where born, etc., but again, I don't know about Irish ones.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately Irish death certificates do not contain much information: name, age (as given by informant), place and date of death, cause of death, marital status (single, married, widowed, divorced), name of informant, date of registration. They do not list birth date or place, parents, spouse, or place of burial.

Although as Aghadowey says ,they don't hold an awful lot of info as the American ones do,if you decide you still wanted to order one you can download the necessary application forms here http://www.groireland.ie/

You only need apply to the one place for any deaths in any county of Eire(Southern Ireland)

Hello BrooklynGirl,

I was thrilled to see someone else searching for HALPINs. 

I am currenty trying to track down my ggrandfather Michael Halpin, born in Kerry, don't know where, don't know when apart from that it was some time in the 19th C and before 1874 when my grandad Richard was born.  He was deceased by 1904 when Richard married.  My Michael Halpin emigrated to England at some stage but don't know where to or when either.  He was married to a Mary Sullivan from Caherciveen, Kerry, again, don't know where or when.

Can my Halpins be related to yours?

Would really appreciate any leads as I am really stuck.

Hi Eagleye,

I doubt if my Halpins are related to your Halpins.  Nobody seems to be related to them My GGgrandfather Edward Halpin came to New York with his family around 1865. I haven't got a clue as to where in Ireland they're from. I haven't found them on any passenger lists to the US, so they could have come through Canada. I have to assume that he had siblings because there were many Halpins in the area I'm investigating in late 1800s New York State.  There's a whole bunch of them but I can't make the connection.  Edward was married to Catherine Connors, if that's any help to you.

Like you I'm stuck. That's why I'm tracking down as many documents as I can find.

How disappointing.  I know that some of my Halpin relatives emigrated to America but have no idea who, where or when.  Maybe, if I am able to delve further, I might get some clues on them.
