1871 Census - Henry Hunt
« on: Monday 06 December 04 19:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm still tearing my hair out over HENRY HUNT as I cannot locate him in 1871. :-[

He was born on 28.10.1841 in Ogbourne St George (nr Marlborough) Wiltshire.   In 1870 when he registered his son John's birth he stated his residence as Aldbourne Wiltshire.  From there he disappears to reappear again on 19.08.1871 when he appeared in Marlborough Court, charged with deserting his children.  After that I know his whereabouts.

Yes, I know what he did was not very nice :( - but I still want to try to find out where he was when the census was carried out.

So if anyone happens to come across him in the 1871 census anywhere I'd be very grateful to know.
Regards,
Simone.

if you could find him in 1861 and find out his occupation it might help.if he was a soldier then, and travelling around he might have had two familys on the go !!!!

Hi,
Yes I had come across that entry for Henry Hunt as a soldier, but I thought I might be clutching at straws there and just hoping that was him.

His first wife was Sarah Cook (born in Aldbourne) who he married in 1860.  They lived in the Aldbourne / Lambourn area for the 10 years they were married.  (I don't have the 1861 Wilts census to check for definite though).  Sarah died in March 1870 after the birth of her last child John Hunt.   Henry registered the birth of John as I mentioned earlier and stated his residence as Aldbourne.

Then he disappears to reappear in Court in August 1871.    In 1879 he married Hannah Rogers in Marlborough and from there on I have all his whereabouts.

I hoped the Court transcript might state where he was found/living when he was brought in to Court, but apparently it doesn't, although I've not seen the original transcript. Below is all it says;

Marlborough Poor Law Union Board of Guardians V Henry HUNT 19.08.1871
Deserting four children. Pleads Guilty.

Henry HUNT deserted his four children, Sarah HUNT 8 years, Hannah HUNT 7 years, Mary HUNT 4 years, Elizth HUNT 2 years at Eastbury nr Lambourne. They were removed from Hungerford Union to this Union and have been chargeable since the 19 November 1870 till now and are still chargeable to the Common Fund of Marlborough Union. The children used to live at the further Ogbourne (Note. the further Ogbourne probably being Ogbourne St George Wilts).

Henry's punishment seems to have been only 5 days imprisonment.

So you can see my conundrum.  Like you I thought the entry for the Soldier Henry Hunt might be him - but I didn't want to just assume.

Thank you for your help anyway, and if anyone reading this has access to any records that might help - I'd be very grateful.

Regards
Simone.
