Chester le Street workhouse

I always was told that my great Grandfather died in the workhouse.  I´ve just found his grave in Chester le Street cemetery.  Would it therefore be likely that he was in Chester workhouse?  He died in 1952 - was the workhouse still in use then?  Does anyone know where I could find info on lists of residents at this time?  His name was Joseph Morby (1870 - 1952).

Very grateful for any info.  It may help to confirm a long told family story.

Workhouses, as such, ceased to exist on Monday 31st. March 1930.
Although many institutions carried on into the 1930s virtually unaltered. The National Health Service Act of 1946 came into force on 5th July 1948, and Institutions now came under the control of Hospital Management Committees under Regional hospital Boards.
In 1948, the former Chester-le-Street workhouse became a general hospital. Now known as Chester-le-Street Hospital, it provides care for the elderly.

Hi sorry to jump on yr post but does anyone know what happened to a body if the person died in the workhouse?

Sally,the workhouse in Chester le Street was closed at the time of Joseph's death,possibly he died there
when it was a general hospital from 1948, there's a generation of folk that still refered to these places as the
workhouse especially in family folklore my father was horrified when he was sent to Gateshead's Bensham
hospital after a stroke as to his(1920's) generation it was alway's known as Bensham asylum which  was
a part of the original Workhouse,anyway hope this is of interest.

Shadow's most workhouses would have had area for burial's in the local cemetery for instance
Gateshead workhouse used section D in the nearby Saltwell Cemetery.
