finding naturalization certificates 1799
« on: Thursday 31 May 07 00:41 BST (UK) »
I have two references to naturalization certificates dated 1799 for people who came into England from Germany.  I know that naturalization certificates were issued  following a private act of parliament  and I have references such as L.J. xiii p.35 (for Johann George Wicke) and L.J. xiii p.71 (for Christian John Adam Witke) but I don't know what the reference refers to. Can anyone help please?
many thanks
Hellen

Hello Hellen

Naturalisation records are held at TNA at Kew, here's their information leaflet on the subject:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=242

This is the section dealing with private acts of Parliament:
Indexes to naturalisation by private act of Parliament up to 1900 have been published by the Huguenot Society and copies of these are available in the Research Enquiries Room among the HO series lists. For acts between 1900 and 1947, consult the Index to Local and Personal Acts (HMSO, 1949). From 1497 the original acts are kept at the House of Lords Record Office, London SW1. Parliament Rolls in C 65 contain an incomplete set of Private Acts. Naturalisation by the taking of the oaths of allegiance and supremacy in court can be found in KB 24 and E 169/86 . The information from these rolls has been published by the Huguenot Society (volumes XXVII and XXV).

Searching the TNA catalogue for witke doesn't yield any hits.

That doesn't answer your question completely so, unless anyone else knows better, an email to TNA might not come amiss.

Good luck

Thanks for your help colin, I googled Johann George Wicke and found him in the german sugarbakers online index. this gave me a reference to his PCC will which I found on TNA documents online. So that was a happy ending and I'm now trying to transcribe the six or so pages of his will.
cheers
