Hi again Guys,

My great uncle James Allan married an Isabella Hunter in Dunscore in 1916.
James was a private with the 1/10th Royal Scots Cyclists.

Would anyone know if there were any army barracks close to Dunscore as I can't think of any connection between James and that part of the world.

The 1/10th were meant to be on coastal defence dutied during the war at Berwick.  This is not even close to Dunscore so I was wondering if there were some sort of training establishment there and they possibly met at the dancing on a Saturday night!!!!

If you can shed any light on this please do as I would be obliged.

Hi Swally

I've just read your posting for the First War army barracks in Dumfries.  I was in Dumfries recently and having passed a signpost for The Devil's Porridge Visitors centre wondered what it is all about.  The only information I can find is that it apparently was a munitions hideout during the conflict.  Perhaps these people could be a course of local recruitment information for you - it's quite near the coast - I think!

The munitions 'factory' spread over several miles and employed hundreds thousands of women.

Yeah I found out that info, I presume that Coastal Defence was as much as watching the coast line as it was looking after the munitions.  I still haven't found out the distance from Dunscore to there.

Think I'll do it now.

In April 1911 the former barracks at Dumfries of the 3rd Kings Own Scottish Borderers (who had relocated their headquarters Berwick on Tweed) were up for auction. The upset (reserve?) price of £3,500 was not met and the sale adjourned.

Perhaps the barracks, if still abandoned, were brought back into service at the outbreak of the War?

If not, was it possible that soldiers were "farmed out" to local farms to stay?
Dunscore is only 10 miles from Dumfries.
