McGilthighnich (or Shaw) of Islay
« on: Wednesday 30 May 07 20:43 BST (UK) »
Seeking any info on Archibald McGilthighnich of Islay

All I have for him is that he was the father of Duncan McGilthighnich or Shaw who married Margaret (Kate) Galbreath in Rothesay in 1791.

Also any info on John McGilthighnich of Islay father of Niel McGilthighnich or Shaw who married Janet Leitch in Rothesay in 1795 in Rothesay, Bute.

I'm hoping to find out who Archibald married and when Duncan was born in Islay.

Any help much appreciated

hi pal,

all that shows up in the igi's:

duncan marries margaret galbreath 5/6/1791
catherine marries angus mckinnish 30/12/1793
neil marries janet leitch 19/1/1795
janet marries patrick mckinnon 9/11/1797

i do not know if you are aware but you can access the 1851, 1861 and the 1871 census for rothesay on freecen, cannot find any mcgilthighnich's, no doubt they dropped the surname.

Thanks Joe

Yes I have those names and spouses and also the parents of each of them. (thanks to Scotlandspeople now having OPR images).

Duncan's father is Archibald McGilthighnich of Islay
Neil's father is John McGilthighnich of Islay
Janet & Catherine's father is John Shaw from North Knapdale

Duncan & Neil used the McGilthighnich or Shaw name for awhile and then anglicised it completely to Shaw.

In trying to find Duncan's father I am stuck because I don't know when Duncan was born or died or when his father Archibald McGilthighnich was married and to whom.

did your archibald go to rothesay?

maybe some kind soul who lives on rothesay can help you discover if there is any gravestones or parish records.

we have so many guests looking in at rootschat, i hope that one of them is from rothesay and will reply to this post.

Haven't got any info that Archibald ever went to Rothesay, though someone has suggested he might have originated from Jura but nothing to substantiate that possibility.

Couldn't even find Duncan on the 1841 census nor any MI's for him.  Don't think they were rich enough for that.

Went to Rothesay few years back but couldn't find anything we hadn't already got at the time.

Another researcher of the family has been looking at OPR's etc too but no joy so far.

Hi JF,

I wonder whether Scott BUIE, eminent Jura researcher, would have any ideas?

I just feel that the MCGILTHIGHNICH name should turn up in the IGI under other variants ...

Have to go now but will try later - though I don't hold out any hope.

Have you posted on TalkingScot - you never know!

Bumping this up because I am also searching for any information on Archibald McGilthighnich b. c1745(my 5xggrandfather) and Duncan McGilthighnich Shaw b. c1770 (my 4xggrandfather).  It appears that the name was changed to Shaw as the name McGilthighnich was dropped after Duncan.   The name doesn't appear to show up anywhere else.     I have checked the name Mac Ghille-Sheathanaich also in the hope that it was a phonetic mis-spelling but no luck there either?
