McCalmont Grocery
« on: Tuesday 29 May 07 21:55 BST (UK) »
I hope someone can help me with information about McCalmont Grocery & Confectionery that was on either Portmuck Road or Middle Road Islandmagee in the 1940's & earlier. The owner was John McCalmont, a great uncle who was a deaf mute. He was also half brother to Sammy McCalmont the ferryman.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hiya J. A. M,

Whitehead is close to Islandmagee. The webmaster of that site may know of someone who could assist you with information about the McCalmont Grocery & Confectionery shop. I spotted the email address on the Whitehead Blog.

Was Agnes (nee McCalmont) who was the wife of John Heaney a member of the same family?

Christopher,
Thank you for the idea. I have just sent an e-mail to the webmaster as you suggest.
Yes, Agnes McCalmont who married John Heaney was the brother of shop owner John McCalmont who was called 'Dummy' because of being a deaf mute. Maybe this derogatory nickname will ring a bell with someone.
A Montgomery cousin remembers going to visit John & Sarah in the 1930's but she can provide no further info.
All of Agnes' & John's siblings were born at Ballymoney, Islandmagee between 1878 & 1893 & John & infant death James are the only ones proving difficult to find.
They were also half-siblings to Sammy McCalmont who ran the Ballylumford - Larne ferry from 1953 to 1982 with Dougie Hood.

I have transcribed the 1911 Census for Islandmagee, County Antrim. There are very many mistakes Transcribing the National Archives Dublin, although it was good to have what was done.

I have corrected most of the mistakes, although there were a few which I just could not make out what they were. The detail is on an EXCEL worksheet and takes about a minute or so to load. There is a link to download a viewer for those who do not have EXCEL installed on their computer. The link to my website :-
